This video of Dennis Gruenling with Doug Deming has been posted before but is definitely worth a re-visit. Such a fabulous Horn like tone from Dennis.

Great cupping technique backed up with an Astatic JT-30 (w/original crystal element)
and a HarpKing 6x10 make for a winning combo..

Such a laid back approach on the fill and solo and some interesting hand and mouth effects to produce chicken cluck sounds and tremolo on the solo.

Played in 3rd position on a Bb Harp

Fun third position piece to practice. Funny enough, when I told Dennis how much I liked the solo on this song which also appears on the Deming/Gruenling album, he indicated that it was Kim Wilson who played the solo on the album.

Interesting! There doesn’t seem to be a harp credit for this track on the album. Here is a Taster of the Solo played on Chromatic.

There's trombone with a plunger backstage, - he's just 'harp-synching' it.

It's unfortunate, that when it comes to blues music, some of the most incredible playing, as is demonstrated here by DG, is only enjoyed by a handful of people. I heard one golf clap in the background.

Such a pity:(

I'm with ya CarlA. Huge fan of DG's playing - absolutely one of the most musical and competent blues players today, IMO. Perhaps we are in the minority in terms of our musical tastes?

Amen Shakeylee. The groove, the rhythmic space. I like the drum, bass, guitar + harp player band configuration - and how they sparingly milk it.

Then there's every note that DG plays. Love how they (and he) stretch out on this. Sweet and Nasty. Not to mention tone worth selling your soul for. Anyone see the devil lately?

Dennis is an incredibly musical player and his "all natural" effects are astounding. The rotary spkr effect at 3:30 is fabulous and so musical. Plus, he's a great guy!

Any thoughts on what's involved in producing the tremolo/rotary speaker effect?

I imagine the first three steps are:
1) Practice
2) Practice
3) Practice

Crazy Good!

One of the few, if not the only harp player that can get away with not singing!

@tmf714: Cool, how many songs is Dennis singing on the new album?!?

Re: tremolo/rotary speaker effect, Dennis says it's solely created by opening and closing the cup, you just have to be very good at sealing off that cup...and then alternate very quickly between cupped/uncupped.

The Kinder amps do love Crystals, but IMO the HK 6-10 sounds equally good with CR/CM's.

John Clifton used a CR/CM into his 6-10 the 4-5 times I seen him live and the tone was as good as it gets!

Loved it.

For what its worth, I reckon it would have presented better if the singer was centre stage, and Dennis on the side.

Thanks Harpoon_man. Very cool! $10 says no one in that crowd knows how hard the stuff he is doing is...

@ TBIrd; it's not THAT hard. He's not playing many notes. They are just the right notes, played perfectly, at the right time, with the right phrasing, inflections, vibrato - and TONE!

It does make a good 3dPosition practice piece, - and I am (practicing with it) thanks to the OP by Grey Owl. After too many decades playing strictly in second, I need it.

I watched this yesterday and had to try it once I got home. It took me about ten seconds to do it. It is a very easy and COOL hand trick. You have shake the harp and mic and open and close your cup in time with each other. I've been doing the shaking the harp and mic thing for a while. I can make it sound like a type of vibrato, but I never thought about a Leslie effect! I'm glad I watched this! I love learning cool stuff!
