Now that's how its done!

Fun to watch the attitude of these players...not picking up on any ego playing, but rather joy of the music and the arrangement.

Nicely rehearsed and executed.

Sweet!

In addition to sounding great, I appreciated the fact that they didn't wear blues costumes. IMO, not looking like a retro act makes the music more alive in the sense of accessibility.

Not only is the harp player stellar, but each member of the group seems to be an excellent player. Their arrangements are very tight and exciting, and they seem to be a really disciplined young group...AND...loving what they are doing. Plus, when the guitar player started to sing, I was surprised as hell. What a great voice, and lyrics in English!

Ditto all the comments above.
Sometimes i forget about the universality of the blues
They are doing a great job of it.

Not much of a cup and using a stick mike ..)

They even make this old warhorse sound modern

Great sound.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that Little Barrie is an influence, I can hear his style in the arrangements, guitar, and vocals.

Wheel:

That's some of the freshest, finest, most energetic precise harp I've heard in years.

What is the harp player's name? I'm going to put the first video in a prominent on this website. I want to identify him correctly.

(My wife is snapping fingers.)

The ending is super-duper. He's the next thing. What's not to like?

AND it's an updating of "Juke."

It's Taro Senga!!!! He was the child prodigy. He's been around for ages. That's why he's so damned good. He the rare example of a boy wonder--like Stevie Wonder--who actually goes on to be great.

He goes on the honorable mention list right now. He's a real find, Wheel. Big thanks for this. As far as I'm concerned, he's a world-leading talent. New breed, next generation.

It's not that he does any one thing in a dazzlingly unprecedented way, it's that he's doing everything right. Great energy, nice (and, at the end, surprising) arrangement, unexpected melodic flourishes that are nevertheless entirely logical, sensible, easy to like. Plus the updating of "Juke" in a way that feels entirely natural.

This is the kind of exciting playing that draws young people to the blues.

Edited to add: I've put the video towards the bottom of this website's alltime harp greats page, below Jason and Dennis. Again, many thanks to Wheel for this find

FIFTY LONG YEARS: A Brief Overview of Japan’s Blues Harp Scene

Kotez is another fine Japanese Harp player. He's really got the Chicago sound down, but has his own twist on it as well. A real sense of humor too, he does some really funny stuff when you catch him live.

Is the 1:10 of MW the Kid just a well done 45 trill with bends put in? Damn, my ears are not good enough. I know lots of you can hear it better than me. This guy would sound good with just a mouth harp… Makes it look so easy and fun

Was thinking maybe [4'454] for each beat. But I can't do it. Practice I guess… btw, mucho thanks for The Deb. Hope you don't mind that I put some of its tab in my web page for a great example of showing rhythm. Great job at playing too.

yes I think he circled this riff! I need to try it on harmonica to say for sure :). It's a little bit harder to play it on G harp on speed like him, I think on higher harmonica it will be easier.
Wow! Thank you for attention to Deb! I really appreciate it!

The lick in question at 1:10 is simply a loop/triplet of 6 blow, 5 draw, 4 draw, but played very fast. Reminds me of something LD Miller would do.

The band sound A LOT like the Ford Brothers stuff. The vocals for sure...the harp, even the amped tones, are very Andy Just-like (I happen to love that band, so that is a compliment).

I'm impressed with the rest of the bad as well. I really like the fact that the singer has such a natural voice and delivery and doesn't seem to be trying to imitate a "blues" singer.

Damn, damn, damn, this gentleman is superb and his band is likewise aces to the extreme. Monster seems to be their name and, in the parlance of 60s musician compliments where being called a "monster" was the best superlative you call someone who was laying it down especially well, the band is apt. I like everything about this man's harp work, especially in the sense that his precision and control of his technique features him as an equal musician; he is not merely someone's friend waiting his or her turn to take a solo. His tone is full, rounded, warm and robust , reminding me of Mark Ford, and he never loses the tune when stepping up his game. His speed is likewise impressive--effortless and quicksilver like Sugar Blue (but distinct) and what caught my ear is that he is not someone given to long , rapid strings of notesm but instead composing his solos of shorter, memorable phrases, each relating to the one before it setting the logic for the phrase that comes next. Even at these speeds he is surprisingly melodic. This is the harmonica surprise of the year. What is this fellow's name? I suspect I will be listening to him and trying to appropiate some of his vibe in my own playing for some years to come. Thanks for posting wheel.

Has played some with WeepingHarpSenoh but his style with this band is much, much tighter and rhythmic. Senoh seemed more a loner IMO in comparison. Sign him up for next HCH Adam - your next big drawing card. Too bad he is so far away…
Thanks Todd but ear still can't quite catch it completely. Some h/w needed I guess.

Great playing and arrangements.

The first one reminds me a little of Big Dave and the Ultrasonics (Dave Morris I think it was on harp) - especially the head.

This superb player and excellent band remind me of how the Brits approached blues in the late 60's.

They seem to put personal ego aside and focus on the joy of the music...making it sound great.

I notice that a lot of players in the US in these types of bands seem to incorporate the "I'm a bad-ass" into their playing, even the rhythm section while playing behind the singer/soloist.

Personally, I prefer the Brit/European approach...let the music do the talking.

Here's a YouTube video of a Japanese show that followed his journey to America, when six years old. There are clips of him playing with Junior Wells and three clips of his performances at the Apollo. He eventually placed fifth in the Amateur Night competition.
