I knew I'd read this somewhere, so I Googled it:

http://www.duaneallman.info/duaneallmanremembered.htm

Dickey Betts:

"Duane played slide guitar more like a harmonica than he did a guitar. Like I was telling about him listening to Elmore James; well, he also listened to all the harp players - Sonny Boy Williamson and all that. He played a lot of harmonica licks on slide guitar."

I completely agree. Grab your harps and try to cop some of Duane's licks on these tracks. He was an amazing harp player, particularly given he didn't even play one...

When I first started to play the harmonica, Duane Allman was the instrumental musician I listened to most and who influenced me the most. Even more than any of the harmonica greats. His phrasing and sparing use of speed, seemed to be more like a vocalist. It seemed like I could always understand him one note at a time. I also think that his use of dynamics was great for the harmonica - as a beginning player with few notes to choose from, I learned to restate simple phrases and just alter the tone and volume. His playing really opened my ears.

Here is a video that I shot of the heir apparent, Derek Trucks, playing slide guitar on last October 2012 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, first playing slide, then straight guitar. He's not too shabby. Slide part at about 3:25 of the clip. Lead guitar at 7:30.

Pistolcat! That's awesome!

Great tone, great vocals and guitar and great sense of humour with the Guitar Hero axe.

Live at the Filmore was one of the first recordings I learned from. I strarted off trying cop The actual harmonica parts. I ended up playing along (trying to) with Duane as well.

The Allmans / Duane / Derek Trucks thing is something that's keeping my interest in blues / rock at the moment. I really love slide guitar and harp and I love the way they put their own spin on lots of modern stuff too. I've been listening to the Tedeschi Trucks Band. This one is inspirational and again, great to follow for harp.
