Would you use delay, reverb or neither for that style of music?
Would you choose 1st, 2nd or 3rd position or would it vary with the song?
And maybe the first question would vary per song.
Thanks

It would all vary with the song. Personally I'd most likely play with a touch of reverb using a cupped stick mic direct into the PA. Again though it would all depend on the song.

Funk is more about the beat .. and note placement..
It seems to be that 12th position would work best there, if any..
But I guess it depends on the song

Like Gre said, Funk is all about the beat...so either just kick back and play a cool horn line or step up and say something...this is more of a Tramp Grove but, I think Jerry makes a solid statement.

Of course the other option is to just go heavy on the effects like Jason...

And Jason talks funk..

Thanks Iceman. I think about your posts a lot as I roll up 95 past Darien a couple of times a week.

I'm usually rollin pretty hard, but I will try my best. I do stay over some in Savannah and in Brunswick, but I'm hindered in movement by being in an 18 wheeler.

Always let the song determine the harp position: thereĀ“s no inherent genre any of them ... -- unless you go to e.g. 6th, where you get a slightly "Eastern" feel (and "Eastern" is not a genre).

Warm sound through PA would be my advice as well.

Short delay. Learning James Brown lines is awesome on harp.

Hondo, its been said here already that it depends on the tune. I'm not real proficient outside of 1-3 though. The register of the harp is more important, if it's too low or too high, or not available in a better register, I'll switch positions to get the notes that will cut. We can't play the whole harmony of a section (of course, but we CAN punch some chords, especially octaves) so I lean on the staccato attack of the trumpet. That approach gets the job done.
But finding a band that can do the songs...
I Feel Good is easy, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Sex Machine and Cold Sweat are great ones to work up.

JR channeling JR Wells/William Clarke from 7:45-8:45 above is some stunning harp. Precise and Attack.
