Hi All
I've been a lurker here for a while and this is my first post, so...hello!
I'm the author of the key finder app for Android. It's free so it's not like this is an Ad or anything. I do it for fun.
I was wondering if anyone here uses it, and if so, are there any small features you'd like to see or annoyances I should fix as I'm doing a new version?
I'm adding the Power Bender and Do-it tunings and a feature to note songs and their keys/harps. I think it'll be handy for gigs and stuff if you're a beginner.
Cheers Johnny

Welcome. Will check it out. I also have a on and off (most off lately) project to transpose harp tab from one position to another using VBA. I wonder if there could be some crossover here? Have to think on that.

Yeah, I see what you mean.
At the minute it lets you choose a song key and a position (or a harp key and position). If you change the position, it automatically changes the harp you need.
A possibility might be that it could allow you to select notes, and when you change the selected position, it could re-map them for you.
It already does something kind of similar with scales because it lets you choose eg. the blues scale and re-maps that for whatever position you've chosen.

Make it recognize slow successive tones and then map to a tab and you would be away & running. That w/b useful for a lot of beginners. On a small screen, a bit tough IMO. But more tablets out there so maybe an App ok.

Hi Johnny,
I've had the app for a while and really like it. One other option that would be nice would be if you could select between showing the notes or showing the scale degrees.
It's a great little app and thanks for sharing it with all us harp players.

Shaganappi - that's a kind of a lot of work but it's something people keep mentioning. I'll maybe look into it. There's a fair few apps that tell you what note you're playing which is kind of halfway there.
Smwoerner - cheers :-) I could include the scale degrees. That would be nice. Is that just for the scale you've selected? Would other notes just be blank?

Have you seen the Harp Ninja app? It won't find the key, but it does do some other useful harp related stuff. (I don't currently have a cell phone. I've got the PC version of the Harp Ninja. I like it, but I usually find my most intensive practice sessions are away from the computer so I don't use it as often as I should- I guess I need to get a smartphone.)

I take some pride in finding keys by ear (ain't app-ing on the stage) but using the app could be excellent practice. You could play to tunes on the radio. An organized set of instructions on how to play would really help fine tune (!) the ability to hear keys. I'm not sure what those directions are but I would think a series of techniques/steps like humming the tonic (easy) and maybe linking that pitch to a practiced scale/phrase and/or...knowing that a guess, if it isn't right, is often a 5th.

Hi Johnny,
My though is to just give an option to show either notes or scale degree. You can still leave the colored blocks over the "selected scale"
For me scale degrees are just a fast way of transposing between positions.
