Ever written a brilliant post only to have it disappear when...?

Yep!

Now on the long ones I copy to my clipboard before hitting the return button.

Saves a bit of heartache.

In google chrome "back" button keeps your post alive.

Nope, but I've written a lot of crap ones and .....it's just as irritating:)

There does seem to be a time related issue with captchas. Take too long writing a post and your captcha accuracy will be of no avail, your post will fail.

I do the same as BW now and'copy to clipboard'.

If I know its going to fail because of time delay I don't even bother to type out the whole chapcha, I just hit one character on my keyboard and post and then paste my 'copy to clipboard' save back into the new message box, correctly enter captcha and post.

If it's a long post with video embeds I will compose the message in word and check the layout there and take advantage of spell check for typos, then copy it and paste it into the message box, enter captcha and post.

Boris's solution is probably the best. Elegant and effective.

Bruce, there is no "brilliant post" by me. Note that I said "you."

But my less-than brilliant posts also disappear. :)
Grey Owl is also ahead of me...
Let's see if that captcha works now...

If you know a dog bites.....

Always, always, always - highlight & copy your text before entering the captcha code and hitting the self-destruct button.

I have to say that some of my most ill conceived posts were thankfully destroyed by the captcha.

For all of the pain it causes me, it might have made me seem a little bit less of an ass.

It times out after 15 minutes. After that, you can either cut and paste/refresh or just type whatever and back page. That almost always works, although I got one that got eaten last night.

Sometimes it's not a time out issue. A lot of times it's the ambiguous captcha code that is presented (and mis-entered). I've had posts get vaporized when it took more no more than 10-15 seconds to make the post.
And the back arrow/button does not work on Firefox, Internet Explorer or SeaMonkey. At least not the version I am running.

Another way to outwit it is to enter in the captcha FIRST, and hit "enter" on a blank post. Once it posts successfully, you can go back and hit "edit" on the post, and type to your heart's content without worry of loss, as there's no captcha for editing a post! :)

But yeah, I do the copy-paste thing usually... (ctrl+a, then ctrl+c)
