My good friend Eddie Martin here in uk had his full harp case stolen from the stage yesterday including acstatic mics and chrom's.

luckily it was handed in 24 hours later, intact, but beware people there are some wicked selfish people out there!!

I have a few personal alarms I stick in my camera cases when working on jobs out in the public. Someone moved one once, almost started a panic, but didn't lose my gear.

There is a special circle of hell for harp case thieves where there's nothing but harp cases filled with Herring Black Blues harps, all really out of tune and leaky in the key of F and the band only knows Mustang Sally.

My student (well, one of them) made me a case from wood, he wanted to make it nice, and I had to let him know, it needed to look like it wasn't worth stealing.
So far, so good . . .

Had my case lifted once in New Orleans and a security guard found it in a dumpster. Double most keys and all the pig took was the 2 chromatics. Serious luck that time.

This is exactly why I lost interest in having a fancy, super cool harp case. My harps reside in a freebie shaving kit I got from my old job, and get carried to the gig in an old LL Bean knapsack.

If you're gigging with a band (vs. just sitting in for a few songs at a jam), be sure to move your harps out of reach during set breaks.

People steal stuff they don't know what to do with--that's the real crime.
Like the guy lifting the chroms and trashing the short harps--they might have been worth more, and more to the point, no one's gonna play 'em in a dumpster!

Just something to think about but, you might want to check and make sure your home owners or renters policy covers your gear. If you’re in a band you may have to purchase a separate business property coverage policy.

I have a small case and larger case. The large case can hold a couple of mics, 2 or 3 chromatics, about 25 diatonics, 2 or three pedals, maybe a small recording device and some other miscellaneous stuff. This stuff adds quick…to go quickly replace all of this at retail could easily hit $3,000 or more.

Then of course if you keep you case open on the floor there is always the chance of the drunk spilling a beer in the case…or worse :)

Thanks to all for the valuable input. I have been thinking about what to do for a case. I am now sure that I need to get something that looks like it is not worth stealing and I can stash somewhere when on the road. It's too bad, really- makes you doubt your faith in mankind.
