Thanks, Frank. Still had them at that price as of 11:13 AM Eastern, and one is on its way to me for Christmas. ;-)

I also noticed they had some other Hohner styles with special pricing in certain keys. The Meisterklasse in C for $62.91 and free shipping, for example:

Glad it worked out for you guys...When I first saw the sale, I thought all the keys were going to be that price...The Key of "A" was it though, still a very happy consumer of that deal :)

I hope it is not like the two I received from Amazon ( music123 ). Both were from 2010/2011 and probably returns. They were horrible. I sent 1 back and the other I am having a tough time gapping the 3 draw.
I am usually good at gapping but this one I think I will have to send to someone better then me to setup.

I got a A crossover recently. 2 and 3 draw were so bad OOTB they are barely playable. I have not done gapping before so maybe sending it back. I could see little tweaks but suprises something this bad got passed thru on a what i can tell will be a quality harp.

It is my belief that every musician needs to become acquainted with simple repair and adjustments of their instrument.
I haven't tried this model yet, but for years I eschewed the Marine Band because of things I had heard others say about it. It's not present in my kit, but I have several now that I have tweaked, and that are great!
The Crossover is almost certainly a quality harp, and if you get a bum one, send it back to SOMEONE, sell it here or learn to smash horns--
Don't start with an expensive harp, of course--would the Marine Band be a good harp to learn on?
Disclaimer: I do repairs for Suzuki, and so as such recommend you only buy our products.

hmmm, we should compare our collective results on this shipment. Sample size just big enough to maybe be significant. Musician Friend might be interested to know (assuming they don't) if the the back order was selected out for some reason.

so are any of these guys actually playing the crossover?
i mean really perhaps steve baker
they all say how great it is but who is using what?

Dave Gage: "One of the best-sounding and playing diatonic harmonicas out-of-the-box. Great for players of all levels and musical styles and worth the extra penny for the increased quality and playability. The sound is bright, but not overly bright. It plays as well as expensive, customized harmonicas."

Joe Filisko: "This Crossover is an exceptional harmonica. I have to say that this is without any doubt the best playing out-of-the-box harmonica that I've ever had my hands on. It's a notable, substantial upgrade to the diatonics I have played. It played very well. That's a big deal, because I trusted it. The tuning is superb; responsiveness is excellent. It's very responsive. The bends are right there."

Steve Baker: "As a Marine Band player for 40 years I really love the Crossover and am proud to have been closely involved in its development from the very beginning. The first time I played the very first prototype with a bamboo comb I was blown away by the sound, volume, response and playing feel and thought 'this is it!' I own a lot of custom harps, but this is what I use on stage because it's tough, reliable, and both plays and sounds great."

Jerry Portnoy: "The Marine Band Crossover is a terrific harp in every aspect: beautiful, sealed bamboo comb; strong, attractive cover plates and; most importantly, well tuned with good volume and projection; plus smooth, responsive playability from bottom to top. It also comes in a handy and unique zippered case. I've made it my personal harp of choice. Another winner from Hohner!"

Phil Wiggins: "It's beautiful. It is nice right out of the box. Great tone. Great feel. I'm loving it."

Dennis Gruenling: "I like the comb a lot: how it felt, how it responded, how it sounded. The feel and response is closer to a custom Marine Band."

R.J. Mischo: "The Crossover is a great instrument! I've been playing professionally since 1979 and have tried all the models and this is the best out-of-the-box harp yet."

David Barrett: "The Crossover is Hohner's best harmonica to date . . . great feel, playability, and most importantly, great sound! For those who want the great sound of our forefathers but the playability of a modern-designed harmonica, put Hohner's Crossover harmonica at the top of your shopping list."

James Conway: "I needed a five overblow and it was there. To get a rack-mounted, five ov

My favorite model to play and customize. Most my harps are XO's. when people want to order a MB from me, I always suggest starting with the XO.

I've never had a problem with an OOTB Crossover. All have been very good and a few were/are exceptional. No shit folks, these are as good as some of my customs. Looking in to my case, I see that I have 14 of them, some of them are primary harps others back ups. I'll add a Disclaimer to prevent scope creep,my choice is largely subjective. There's no way that everyone will find these harps as satisfying as I do.

I noticed on Rockin Ron's site that when you buy reed plates for either a Deluxe or a Crossover, they ship the same plate. Does that mean buying reed plates for a Deluxe will be an upgrade, or do they both use the same reed plate?

It has been shared by Hohner that the reeds and reed plates are the exact same on all MB models. They are drilled for the MBD and XO, and the XO is tuned to a different compromise that is closer to ET.

The cover plates are also the exact same, but have different stamps. The MBD uses slotted cover screws, whereas the XO uses phillips.

IME, the current production MB, MBD, and XO play fantastically. I have not hard evidence, but I think there was a time where the XO had something unique about the plates/reeds. However, recent harps suggest the three are now closer to the same.

End of the day, I prefer working on XO if only because they are already drilled and tapped. I love the sound and feel OOTB. As previously stated, they are my favorite harps.

I deleted my earlier post on this subject because I had misconstrued something Ron had told me. My only relationship with Ron is as a customer. I have been impressed with his service and I was further impressed that I heard from him shortly after my posting. He appears to just be a small businessman but the way he gets things done and keeps track of things, I sometimes wonder if he has a legion of elves working for him:-)

What I just confirmed with him, is that he tries to order specific original replacement parts for Crossover and MBD, but no matter which he orders, the same plate is sent. Hohner would know if there is a difference between original plates and replacement plates on these models.

I have a couple of Crossovers but I do not have a Marine Band Deluxe. These harps are less similar than I thought they were. I see from Hohner’s copy that the MBD is nailed together like the original. I can’t tell all of the differences from the copy as part of the MBD description is in German, even on the English web page. It is clear from the copy that the tuning is “Traditional HOHNER” on the MBD and “modern compromise” on the Crossover. I don’t know exactly what those two terms mean.

I have an E crossover that I have replaced the reed plates on. I don’t know if I can play notes consistently enough into a tuner to get the exact tuning of the replacement plates. Even if I could I don’t know how to differentiate between Traditional HOHNER and modern compromise tuning.

I lifted the following right off the Hohner web site.

http://us.playhohner.com/instruments/harmonica/diatonic/marine-band/

Marine Band Deluxe
• Pearwood comb
• Arched stainless steel covers with side vents, nailed
• 20 Classic reeds, 0.9 mm brass reed plates, mounted with nails
• Single laquered pearwood comb
• Traditional HOHNER tuning

Crossover

Marine Band Crossover
• New improved cover design gives greater volume
and stability while preventing reed rattle.
• Triple-coated laminated bamboo comb (patented), an
innovative renewable natural material.
• Attractive HOHNER logo brand on back of comb. Covers
and reed plates fitted with Philips head screws permit easy
assembly and disassembly and facilitate maintenance.
With the Crossover we have expanded the Marine Band series to introduce a new, top-of-the-line professional quality instrument for the discerning player in modern blues, rock, jazz, soul or funk. The revolutionary laminated bamboo comb (patented) is completely sealed, making it water repellent and exceptionally stable. In combination with the screw together assembly the Crossover is extremely airtight, with fast, even response and a raspy, powerful sound which is exceptionally well suited to amplified playing as well as acoustic styles. The modern compromise tuning is ideal for single note playing in different positions in a wide range of contemporary styles, while still retaining a full chord sound, making the Crossover an optimal addition to the great Marine Band range.

Just got my XO today. My first XO. Only played it 5 minutes. Really nice harp! Very even response across all holes. Really comfortable to play. I like the opened up covers and brass? coverplate screws. I could OB 5 & 6 and I'm not really an OBer. Heck of a deal for under $40.

Mine arrived and it is great. Can OB 1-6 Otb. 6ob extremely smooth. I don't od well so i can't comment on that end, except that it plays well. It will need a little tweaking on holes 1-3 for my liking, but I am impressed. Comb is very comfortable. I would switch to these if they normally went for this price...
