MP: "...breath moisture tarnish on the reed plates." I meant to check this before I played it. My box was torn enough to have removed the harp -evidence to me. I don't appreciate not being informed if these were used. BS

Littoral, i was actually pleased that it was test played by a human. and holes 1 through 6 is where the 'half moon' tarnish was most apparent. there are subtle nuances that humans pick up on that machines cannot. i acquired my F Crossover two years later and opened it up before i played it just to see if it was tested that way too. i saw no tarnish.
so Littoral, i keep a 2oz spray bottle of 91% alcohol and shoot germy harps liberally with it. i wipe w/ a piece of t-shirt. 91% dries fast and the smell goes away quickly. just a thought... PS. it works great on that opaque film that forms on cover plates when people don't wipe them after playing. Gross, huh? ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.

I got mine today and played it right away. My first impressions? It's the smoothest, most responsive playing harp I've ever experienced, which isn't saying much compared to you old timers, I know, but still. My bamboo combed GM's come close, but not quite as fluid. As for OB's, some are there, but not as good as I can make them myself. I'm a satisfied customer. Too bad they're normally so dammed expensive.

Second Impressions:
Still the best OOTB harp I've played.
My GM's set up for, and execute overblows/overdraws more easily, at least on the A harp, at least for me (I'm not a big time overblower; basically 6OB and 7OD); the differences in responsiveness between the bamboo combed GM's and the XO are so subtle as to be meaningless to all, perhaps, but the most demanding professional; the XO feels tiny compared to the GM's - I've (almost) never been a MB player, so the size of the XO is new to me, and will take some getting used to. The A GM is actually a bit louder too, even without opened-back cover plates. I could go with the tone of either - they sound awfully similar to me in fact.
I still like it a bunch. I'm not at all sure the price of the XO would ever justify itself to me, given my happy experience with the GM's and the Hetrick combs. It's very nice to have the play-a-bility of the re-combed GM's validated. New GM prices on ebay, or musician's friend, usually run anywhere from $25-$35. Add a bamboo comb for $21, and your cost is +/- $51. But then you have that comb for life, more or less, to be put on any replacement GM you might buy. A one time purchase, whereas you pay for the XO bamboo comb every time you might buy a XO. Two GM's, one bamboo comb - +/- $81. Two XO's, +/- $130. Not worth the extra $50 to me, after comparing the two more closely.
If I can find great deals on XO's, I guess I'd buy it again. Otherwise, I'll probably stay with my bamboo-ed GM's.
BTW, both reed plates are stamped with 0811. Is this August of 2011?
Maybe some Third Impressions to follow.

"will a golden melody reed plate fit on a crossover comb??? "
no, the GM plate is pretty unique in size and shape. it's very different from the MB 1896, MBD 2005, Crossovers and Thunderbirds. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.

So, mine came with a sickly 2 blow hole. But, it turned out OK. I grabbed my new Wiha 262 60mm and opened her up. I poked and plinked the reed a bit...gave it a test blow without the covers on. All sounded good.
Then, I put the cover on and, dang the thing was still choked out. So I repeated the process a couple times...and finally it sounded AOK. I sure do love my new Wiha 262. ---------- Sun, sun, sun Burn, burn, burn Soon, soon, soon Moon, moon, moon

just for fun i installed a hardwood bends "juke" comb to attach the cover plates i would have to drill not sure i want to go to all that trouble i used clamps to hold them on sounds pretty much the same perhaps a "little" less bright
next up is a marine band comb i have spent hours on sanding and sealing when i first heard they were using bamboo i had to laugh they played it up like it was some big deal i thought to my self they are using bamboo because it is most likely the cheapest wood they can find it grows like 6 feet a day lol
but now that i have tried one i am no longer laughing it seems perfectly suited for harmonica has a nice feel

i love it when a plan comes together! i received my "a" harp but it only had a packing slip no invoice so i called mf and had them email me one took that over to guitar center asked them to match the price the store employees are awesome they will match the price no problem but the computer will not let them i offer to pay full price then he can refund the difference. he tells me it is not that simple but he does not give up the only way he can do the deals is if he charges me two dollars more than i paid "each" seams like a pretty fair deal to me i did not get the lowest price guarantee but i was able to order 6 more in different keys the employees there have restored my faith in guitar center.
this was such a positive experience i will go back there i may just pick up a wireless transmitter they deserve my business these folk went above and beyond my expectations and deserve a shout out!

not sure i ever need another "a" harp i have several a's i was able to pick up crossover's in a c d f and g 2 of each key the hohners are nice i only bought them because of the price the seydel 1847 sounds more like the marine band than the crossover does however i really really like the crossover it plays like a custom harmonica i love the comb and the cover plates but more than anything is the size grew up on a marine band and that is what i am used to
it took awhile to get use to the seydel it is the same size as the MS hohners if seydel were to make a steel reed harp the same size as a marine band they would "corner the market"
