Bad Penny Blues by Humphrey Lyttelton and his band is ingrained deep in the public consciousness in the UK. For various reasons: Humph himself, Joe Meek, The Beatles. It was recorded well before my time, so from my viewpoint it's "always been there".

But I've not seen anyone playing Bad Penny Blues on harp, even though it lays out beautifully in 2nd position. In truth, you need one 6OB in a later verse to play it exactly, but it's only a passing note so you can fake it with a substitute. You may need to pitch-shift it if you've not got the right harp key. It's fine in F (Bb harp).

It's more a jazzy blues, so a chance to get away from your usual blues-harp tricks. Not a warble in sight. It's got a lot of good stuff: chromatic runs (e.g. 3' 3 4+ 4' 4), a mix of major and minor blues scales, lovely syncopation, long wailing notes, use of the 5 draw bend to add inflection. Plus little fills and phrases you won't hear on your usual blues-harp records.

It's one of those songs that is a little source-book of ideas you can use it all sorts of situations.

It's been ready for your attention for over 60 years, what are you waiting for? :)
