One of my sons wants to do some home recording, and I looked around at what's current for input devices for the PC.

I bought him the Behringer 302USB, which has a direct USB input/output. And one input channel with either an XLR input for mic, or 1/4" input for e.g. guitar. That's got EQ and Stereo Pan. And a second channel for a line-level instrument like a keyboard. Headphone output with it's own volume control.

I know people generally aren't keen on Behringer guitar pedals, but my experience with their mixers and speakers has been very good.

This little device does seem to work really well too. You can get cheaper I/O devices but they often don't have trim and gain controls etc. so can lead to level mismatches. Also, I'd rather have pots to turn than software sliders.

I owned that 302usb mixer. Yes, it is a good deal, especialy that line level inputs (white and red).

I am going to record my first album soon, so I have studied a lot about how to record at home. Is just like learning an instrument, lots of gear choises, lots of youtube videos on how to doit and so on.

I would advise you to use REAPER. Is a full daw, way better than audacity, and free as long as you want.

Check this youtube series, it gives you really good tips on how to set up your recording space:

No real experience of recording (Zoom B3 pedal with USB and Audacity)
Just bought myself a belated Xmas present a Tascam DR-05.
Really impressed with the quality. Intuitive controls, after reading manual.
In particular it has a 'slow down' feature. This combined with the ability to place tags in recordings means you can slow down a section (down to 0.5*) and loop it until you haver it in your brain/muscles.

Mine came with a 4GB card and just upgraded to 32GB for a fiver.
Decision made based on web reviews. Chose it over the Zoom H1/H2. No regrets as yet!
