In practice I go Harp Break -> PA, i.e. via the mixer. We have a small but excellent system which is appropriate for the small rooms we play.

But I've tried using the pedal -> Powered speaker directly and it's good. I used the Behringer Eurolive B210D, which is 200W, with a 10" speaker and a compression driver. It's rugged, clean, powerful, small and light. An amazing value. Not pretty though.

I'm not interested in clean harp sounds, only gritty-electric, so I put a pedal in front of it. But if you want clean, it is that. Unlike a typical guitar amp it also has an XLR input. So you could plug your 57 directly into that - no IMT needed.

Bear in mind that it doesn't have guitar-amp tone shaping, it is just a clean thing. There is a two channel eq though.

Point is, if you've got a sound you like from one of your tube amp, you can add the powered speaker and keep the tone - just louder!

...for a while I kept going back to the tube amp, thinking that it gave a superior sound. But then I listened back critically our rehearsal recordings and it's clear I've got more important things to focus on than small differences in amp tone. One of those is having enough volume.

You're right. The B210D is not pretty, but I'm not so good looking either.... But I'm intrigued by the concept - mic, pedal, powered speaker. I need to dig into it more. Thanks for your response.

I do think the looks are probably a hurdle though. If you arrive somewhere with a tweed-covered tube amp and a bullet mic, that's all normal. You're a budding harp player who knows what's what. And you can engage in the bonding activity of discussing your kit and trading up by buying other people's old equipment (a bigger tweed-covered amp) and the cycle continues. Some time later you end up with a 6x10 HarpKing, a bad back and a divorce.

Anything else and you'll feel you have to justify the unusual choice of equipment.

Good call on the PylePro PDMIC 78, that thing really is a great value. Sounds great for a $10 mic.

I didn't know you used a PA rig MTG. That's exactly what I've been thinking of trying. You can get an older used PA rig pretty cheap, if you look in the right places.

An instead of chasing bigger and bigger tube amps, You could have one really sweet sounding 5 - 15 watt and just drive it with the PA. Seems like a winner to me.

Certainly a thing to try to see the pros and cons. It always seems the tube-ampers are a constantly buying and selling amps in search of something different/something better so I get the impression there's no holy grail end point anyway.

Small Amp - there is a guy selling a Memphis Mini in Scotland - I've put a link in the 'For Sale' Forum.

Yea the Memphis Mini seems like more hype that anything else IMO.

Re "constantly buying and selling amps in search of something different/something better "

Yea, I think part of that has to do with searching for better/different Tone. But I think alot of it has to do with, what I like to call, "Amp Junkies".

I see guys buying and selling "holy grail" amps all the time. So I think it has alot to do with the addiction of Gear.

That's why with this amp I'm currently building, I'm leaving Lots of room for Improvement and Tweaking.

That way I can keep trying different things without buying new amps all the time. ( Atleast thats the plan)

It's going to be able to run on a few different sets of power tubes, preamp tubes, ect. Also with plenty of room internally for adding things to the circuit.

So Hopefully as I get better ( both in playing and in my knowledge of amp circuits ) I will be able to shape the amp into something really great. It should be pretty darn great to start with, but.....

I'm not knocking gear addiction, it can be a lot of fun. And I like experiment with kit too.

You're amp sounds great, I'd love that where you can try out different components. From the relatively little I've done it seems you can get real differences in sound.

I've not tried a Memphis Mini, but it seems like it ought to be a fine 5W amp, and with it's line-out room for a bit more besides. But worth knowing what it is and what it isn't, coz none of these things are cheap.
