I'm finding great satisfaction of late learning licks from songs. Been listening to Slim Harpo today and working out the licks to King Bee. He keeps most of his harmonica nice and simple but effective. Making it easier to learn from him.
I would recommend any beginners to listen to him and try out his licks.

I love figuring out songs. The rewind button on my car stereo is about Worn out. (Seriously)

I don't think you can truly appreciate a player until you have worked out a few of his/her songs. You really start to appreciate their note choices and how they went about phrasing what they were trying to say. Not to mention the great licks, different styles and new patterns you learn. I don't know about yall, but i get stuck in the same note patterns .... over and over. Just learning a lick that uses the notes in a different way or a different hole pattern can greatly impact my playing. And has many times.

It's amazing how much the masters could do with so little, isn't it? And how even a song that sounds complex sometimes really isn't that hard. Note wise that is. Copying their nuances is a whole other ball game

SBW II drives me nuts. I try so hard to get his sound. I just can't do it. He's was Super Human. I'm just chalking it up to that. Lol.

Try to breakdown some of Ronnie Shellists songs off of the Til Then Album. They are great. There's some fancy stuff, but alt of it is also simple notes utilized the right way. Ive learned alot from his songs.
