Its funny how the brain works.

For the last few days Ive been in a pretty killer Rut. Where i haven't been able to play ANYTHING! ... Milder forms of this happen to me sometimes, where I have had the harp players equivalent of writers block. But never quite like this. Usually I a tribute it to psyche meds jammin up my creativity, but this was a whole new level. Still probably caused by the same thing, but .....

Anyhow, like i said it usually feels like writers block. Where I have the will and enthusiasm, but the creative brain says "OUT TO LUNCH" .... This time its similar. I want to play, but ... enthusiasm. ..gone....creativity ... blocked. And it lasted like this for a few days. I could barely muster up a couple of notes. Seriously, it was wierd.

Today when i got home from work i sat with the guitar for a min (which i NEVER do.) And it must have jarred something loose. Because when I decided to put on a jam track, play some amped harp, n just see where it went. Man it went. Nobody was home and I just let it Rip.

It flipped the script and just started comin out. N it sounded good. I know yall have had those lil self jam sessions when everything you play sounds great. And you almost can't believe it's you playing. I actually recorded a bunch of em. The last couple (which were ofcourse the best) i couldn't record because i ran the looper out of memory. Lol. Yea i recorded a few.

But it was pretty desperate there for the better part of a week. I just lost it. Couldnt play a lick. Literally. But after that lil jam session I'm all charged up. I didnt even wanna stop playing. But I guess I need to eat. (Atleast that's what the old lady says.)

I really don't know the point of this thread, but I felt like i needed to type it for some reason. Lol. So there it is.

Have you seen Jason Ricci's video where he talks about losing his inspiration through bipolar meds and working on patterns with a metronome, finding another way to inspire himself? I haven't seen it for a while...it is a description of what he was doing and how he found a wAy to work around it
I think this one:

A little visualization approach here: picture yourself riding a bike down a road and suddenly you fall into a rut. You can't seem to pedal or climb out. Your effort seems hopeless. So you change tack. You turn and follow the length of the rut and now it's a groove and you ride your way out. Your rut became a groove by changing your approach.

I'm not sure what all that means but those are my thoughts that spewed out.

Hey Doc, love the image... and the beauty of it is, it doesn't just apply to music, but to life in general. Mind if I borrow it and quote it?

Bee yea. ..that's pretty much it. Wow.

Yea i stop taking them sometimes (usually fri - sun. ) because its like your mind is a computer. There's no creative juices. I may even come up with some really great and complex licks in this frame of mind. But when i play them, it's so matter of factly, If that makes sence. No expression or feeling in it. Well some, but nowhere near what it should be. Idk. It sucks, things just can't get flowing right. My improv skills just goto hell.

Ill have to watch that video fully. Sounds like he might have something figured out. I wonder if he's still taking em. Or how he got around it.

MTG. ... you can have em buddy. Lol.
