Paganini was, because of his incredible skill on the violin, thought to have sold his soul to the Devil. It was good publicity no doubt and he didn't deny it.
Can the same be said for Robert Johnson?

I think Robert Johnson spread himself the story about having sold his soul, and he recorded a song about it ("crossroad blues"). In that, he emulated one of his models, Tommy Johnson, who said the same things about himself.

I both cases, I guess it was good publicity, and a way to mock the bigotry.
