I'm thinking of buying an octaver pedal. Mostly for singing bass lines etc while using the looper, but perhaps also for harp effects.

Any suggestions? I know Brendan Power uses Korg Pandore in one of his videos. J-Sin uses POG. What other models would be good?

I use the Boss OC 3 pedal. It has monophonic and polyphonic settings on it so you can bend chords and octaves. It tracks the notes really well and works great for me. It's about 80 quid in the UK.

EHX octavers are perfect, POG, HOG are cool, bunch of useful knobs but bulky and pricey, microPOG is small and cool.
BTW if you play alone you also need some delays, reverbs, maybe overdrive, and you don't need to be too loud, so I'll recommend to take one multiFX pedal, I'd recomended something from Digitech RP series (RP255 or RP355) because you can buy for them ready to use harmonica patches and even don't need to worry about feedback and tweaking, just plug it to PA or keyboard amp and play.
P.S. For full band I prefer to use guitar amps ((:

There are pitch shifting effects in Line 6 m13 unit. I have not tried one personally but like the idea of everything being in one box.

+1 on the EHX POG.

If you go for a Boss Octaver, make sure you know which version you're getting the OC2 works fine on single notes, but cannot track chords at all. Never tried the OC3.

I also use discontinued Boss Harmonist and Boss PS-3 they works good, track chords but harmonist don't allow to kill dry signal.
Boss PS-5 is good too, Brendan Power uses it for octaves (he uses his KORG pandora for drive, reverb and delay as far as I understand).

POG2!!!!! You'll dig having presets! You can get them used for around $250.

The bass octaver on my M13 doesn't track as well as the EHX stuff, but it does track as well as the other octavers out there. If you play single notes it works great. It also doesn't give you the option of playign two octaves down. In general, most modular effects don't track harmonica chords well.

I think, if you are into using effects, the POG2 is a must after delays. That being said, I don't have one and have only tried them with other people's rigs.

The POG2 can also net some sweet organ sounds for harmonica.

The Boss PS-5 is a cool pedal, way more than just an octaver. It tracks well, has pretty good tone (not quite as good as the POG but close), but has lots of other stuff the POG doesn't. For example, it gives really good intelligent harmonies (where you select the key and it harmonises in tune in various intervals). You can also get a passable accordion and Hammond organ sound out of it on other modes, as well as some interesting special effects (pitch diving, where the pitch dips like a bend when you hit the pedal, at selectable speeds and intervals). Lots of bang for the bucks.

I tried a PS-5 and agree with Brendan. My one caveat is that the pedal doesn't have presets in that if you want to move from effect to effect, you have to manually adjust your settings.

The Line 6 M series and POD HD series has the same options and can be set up as presets. They are also more money. I guess it depends on what you ultimately want out of it.

i use the EHX MicroPOG. I like it a lot and the musicians i play with like it a lot. Tracks polyphonically and monophonically very well, even at fast tempo--you won't out run it. Very harmonica friendly and responds well to technique, so it's not just a sound effect. Simple stripped down version of the POG.

Btw, i have two. One is stock which i use through my SWR bass amp. The other one has a true bypass mod by Analogue Man and i use that with my tube amps, and it seems to get along better with the tube amps. (I use different rigs for different gigs.)

Very cool, very reliable, very easy to set up and simple to operate.

I have a Digitech RP350 with patches from Richard Hunter. I don't know how they compare to other pedals, but for the money they are great value!

Richard's patches bundle has every sound I've ever needed.

@Boris - do you know if you can do different loop phrases with the RP355
and does it have a octave effect on it ?

@micha - What do the "patches from Richard Hunter" do ?

@Boris do you play live with the Digitech RP ?

Is there any other pedal like the Digitech RP series (RP255 or RP355) that is worth checking out ?

Do either have a octave effect ?

And do you know if your able to do loop phrases on them ?

In your opinion what is the difference between them and have you tried the RP500 ?

What didi you mean by
" because you can buy for them ready to use harmonica patches and even don't need to worry about feedback and tweaking, just plug it to PA or keyboard amp "
What do this patches do differently and what are they called ?

Sorry for all the questions but I am excited about all this !!

Small quiet gigs without drums, plus I use it to add effect to clean
vocal mic onstage, for loud gigs I use two guitar amps.

> Digitech RP series (RP255 or RP355) that is worth checking out ?
Yes, they are cool. Check http://hunterharp.com for more info.

> Do either have a octave effect ?
Yes, and octave effect sounds at least as good as my Boss HR-2 harmonist.

> And do you know if your able to do loop phrases on

I have only Digitech RP200 and it don't loop phrases, as far as I
know, Digitech RP255 and 355 have such ability, but as Reichard Hunter
mentioned they sucks as loopers comparing to Boss Loop Station

> In your opinion what is the difference between them and have you

AFAIK 255 and 355 have some better reverb module than 200, looper, USB
for uploading and editing patches. I don't try any except my RP200.

Again check http://hunterharp.com for patches for RP200, RP300, RP350,
RP250, RP255, RP355 (BTW, Richard Hunter is perfect harmonica player,
one of my favorite).

I suppose that some MultiFX pedals like Line6 POD can sounds great,
but I didn't try. The only reason I recommend you Digitech is great
set of patches for all cases prepared by great harmonica player to
harmonica players. Working with amp modeling effects is usually pain
in the ass, Richard Hunter patches is plug and play.

I think a used M13 is a great investment in a lot of crazy and useable sounds. The delays alone are worth the money...everything else has a learning curve, but rocks.

I have several vids here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mikefugazzi+m13&aq=f

I am pretty sure almost every clip with my coverband here: www.mikefugazzi.com/groovestew has the M13 in use. Click on the Songlist/Audio tab.

Really, if you want to do octavers right, the EHX is the way to go. If you want a Leslie or organ sound, the rotary model on the M13 is very so-so.

I bought an Electro-Harmonix Micro POG a few months ago and I really like it, and its easy to use.

I use it with a Boss DM-2 delay and an E-H Holy Grail Nano reverb... and I really like them !

For the price you can't get a better deal than a BOSS gt-10b bass effects pedal. 200 presets and 200 user programmable effects. It has a looper, stereo outputs. Unlimited effects, octave, reverb, delay, ANYTHING. You can get a used one for $300-350. I got one for $300 used from guitar center. It has an effects pedal to adjust each effect. Can mix any effects. Simply, there is no better deal.

I know DubFX uses the Boss GT-10b so it works really well with beatboxing and voice. However, it's bit expensive. I could get Boss GT-8 used with a reasonable price, but I wonder whether the range for bass pedals is better for voice & harp as they seem to be used more in beatboxing.. Experiences, anybody?

I was also thinking of Boss VE-20 as it's specifically made for vocalists and seems to have options for octave switch also.

POG2 and POD HD could be good choices also. So many options out there...

I am really interested in the POD HD. I really like the M13 a lot, but had I realized the HD was coming out, I would have kept my M9 and gotten one of those. It seems SO flexible and would maybe be a great option for going straight to the board...dunno, haven't tried the amp models, but there is a store in town I could try them through my exact PA.

Has anybody tried Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro Synthesizer? It seems to have octave switches as well as some other parameters. The Freq range is optimized for bass so it might be better for vocals?

Question:
Do harp players usually go an octave up or down?
