It involves tuning a tuning fork, gold, and a laser!

Thanks, Nate!
I always wondered how they worked. It's wonderful that their so cheap, eh.

Watching this reminded me of my obsession with "HowStuffWorks" ... now to browse that site again... I wonder how that Iphone tough technology works.

Darn, I was going to be productive tonight. Heheh.

When I saw it I immediately thought about a thread from a couple days ago about how to tune a reed accurately. 1/600th of a hertz! 440 indeed!

BBQBob would say that it is more realistic that you'd have to tune the reed to A442-A443 to avoid sounding flat with a band...
hahaha, I dunna how I remembered that.
Reading this forum is giving my knowledge I didn't even know I had.

You should have used one of those boomerang harps. If you missed you'd get another try!

The real question is, "What species of spider uses quartz along with their web to feel vibrations?".

The piezoelectric effect.

SAME PRINCIPLE applies to crystal microphone elements. In the case of the watch, you put a tiny current into a crystal, and get mechanical motion as a result. In the case of the microphone, sound waves transfer mechanical energy to the crystal which makes an electric current.
