Hey htownfess, JT30, Sonnyboy and all you Houston harpers:

After several months of dismal financial misadventures, a true dark night of the soul, I have stumbled into a great opportunity contracting with a successful and busy Houston remodeling company and I have relocated to Houston.

Please let me know of any great jams or social opportunities, I haven't been to any jams in over a month and I am hungry to play with some folks.

I am going to try to make it to Dan Electro's tomorrow night (Thursday) for the Terry Green Jam. What else is going on in H-Town?

I am excited about Houston, a huge new world, and it will also put me closer to Todd Greene and the gang in NOLA!

Hollah!

That's Teri Greene with an "i"--accept no substitutes :) He readily admits that the Dan's jam is pretty blues-rock oriented, but he will take as good a care as he can. Get there early, catch their opening set, introduce yourself, and don't pester him, but when he says jammers should check in with him, check in with him so he knows you're still in the house. He's really dedicated to crafting good lineups for sets if he can so you may not get up by strict chronology (there are some usual suspects doing early signups anyway). Unless somebody brings a harp rig, you'll be through the PA.

I usually go to the Wednesday night jam at the Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club. The owner Tom McLendon is a Butterfield devotee and will be playing his 545/Twin Reverb on the 9:30 opening set--look for a big guy in shades and a Big Easy shirt & introduce yourself. He's nice about loaning his rig and we should have a house Harp Attack rig real soon, maybe starting tonight. There's a harp-friendly house Super Reverb RI also. I tend to bring out the mad science de jour that I'm fooling with, but tend to get there late due to work. That jam goes largely in the order that you sign up, but Jonn Richardson is conscientious about trying to make those lineups work. The last-Thursday Houston Blues Society jams at the Big Easy are also a good hang, bring in a different crowd than the regular Wed. jam does.

The Sunday night jam at Shakespeare Pub starts @ 8 pm and is fairly harp-friendly--no house harp rig but there will probably be one you can borrow, as Little Terry Rogers and Robert Taylor are out there pretty often. Spare Time Murray runs that one largely chronologically.

Rick Lee's Tuesday jam at the Hideaway is one I go to sometimes. No house rig and Rick's a good guy but tends to put the maximum number of players up there every set, going chronologically, so I bring something loud if I go.

Sonny Boy Terry is at Shakespeare's every other Thursday night and that's blues harp epicenter for Houston socially. Catch his whole show (Jonn's been playing guitar with him often lately), sit in a little, see who else drops by. That's another early start, 8 pm IIRC.

BIG event this Saturday: Dedication ceremony for a Lightnin' Hopkins state historical marker in Third Ward near the old Eldorado Ballroom, 10 am, going to be a major convocation for the whole Houston blues scene with a good show after the ceremony, so hit that if you can.

That's not all that's going on, plenty other jams I don't get to, for instance, but it'll do for a welcome mat :)

Good luck in the Big H, Shanester-now you're only 5 hours away from us here in the Big Sleazy. I gotta get over that way eventually-maybe I'll take a ride with Harvey.

I guess this means you won't be in Austin the weekend after next when I am there?

Im in Pasadena , right south of Hou. I have to stay away from places where a strong liklihood of me overindulging is present ie bars & clubs, but maybe we can jam down at Discovery Green or something sometime. Wouldnt be as exciting I know, but I have to watch myself. I try to be a 2 beer guy , but it dont work in a bar/club

Shane, Terry Rogers has become a good friend of mine, and I go see him every chance I get. He is currently holding down the Harp Duties at Shakespears on the Sunday night jam, and he brings his Harp Attack pedal to play through. It works pretty well there. Tell him I sent you.

Discovery greeen is a pretty cool city park downtown. They did the Hou. debut of Pocket full of soul last May, Jason Ricci & Les Stroud were there.
Unfortunately I wasnt . has a re-enactment where I play straight harp.
I open to wherever, I am about 15 min. south of downtown down 45 south

Thanks for the info, Harvey. I will definitely check out Terry @ Shakespeare's, although for the next month I'll be going back to Austin on the weekends to finish up business/move.

Maybe I'll to Houston early one Sunday and drive straight to Shakespeare's...It looks like a cool scene!

Steve J. I'll stay in touch!
