There's a crazy story about what Sonny Boy would do to keep the band from stealing any of his liquor. I've heard the same story from two primary sources but before I pass it on I'd like to find out who else may have heard a version to measure -to some degree- the possibility that it's a myth. One source is generally referred to around here as BW. So...?

Trust me, if you've been around those guys long enough, you hear stories like that by the truckload. I just wish I had a tape recording constantly going when I was on the road with Jimmy Rogers and he had stories by the truckload that would make you laugh yourself silly about those old guys including Rice Miller.
Rice Miller, as well as a person I personally met, Big Walter Horton, were noted for telling a lot of BS stories in their lifetime. Jimmy told me just a tiny portion of what they had said. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Ok, he liked liqour a lot, but I have heard a story where a woman in the audience became ill in front of the stage and he carried her backstage and looked after her completley selflessly:)

I suspect it's a "story", especially since I heard an almost identical version from both sources, Sam Lay and Big Walter (about 25 years apart). In the least graphic on-line way I can, what could he have whipped out and done to the bottle to insure nobody would wrap their lips around it.

That reminds me of a joke :
A guy walks in a bar and orders a beer. Then he needs to go to the lavatory, but he thinks : "If I go, someone will drink my beer". So he writes on a paper "I spat in the beer", leaves it on the counter and goes to the toilets. When he comes back, he finds another piece of paper written : "Me too !"

I saw on the trailer for "Cadillac Records" where Little Walter gets out of a car to shoot a guy in the head that's using his name. When the other guys in the car ask him if he did it because of the money the fake Little Walter was getting off of his name he told em' "NO, it was because he was using MY name." Not sure how true that story is of if it was just something made up for the movie.

It's made up for the movie. Cadillac Records is based on a true story. Creative license was taken by the movie writers.

If you want to learn about Little Walter, get his biography. Scott Dirks probably knows more about Little Walter, than Little Walter knew.

Ditto on the Dirks book. It's a great read. I never would have guessed LW dug Lawrence Welk (true).

He definately didn't shoot the guy in the head(in the movie), I think it was the leg, if I remember correctly. But as Joe L said, it was just made up for the movie. But I do remeber reading that Walter use to get pretty upset about other people using his name to get gigs(so that part's true, but as far as him shooting some stranger because of it, well I'm pretty sure that was just creative license on the part of the film makers).

there were a few players using little walters name . Little Sammy Davis was one, he was playing with earl hooker and george smith was notorius about impersonating little walter and jimmy reed . Little Walter knew both of those guys and he never shot them.

Groyster1 - that's the way a lot of people on the scene spoke. The term, motherfucker, is/was a term of endearment. If a person was easily offended by the use of street language, they couldn't hang on e scene. Inner cities are filled with interesting characters.

@Groyster1 --- Joe L's right and from hanging with those old black musicians, you learn to get used to it. When I was on the road with Jimmy Rogers, hell, he'd talk like that too and told me he had to talk differently with white people because whites expected a whole different thing. Why?? Well, the best thing I can tell you is to completely be out of a largely white neighborhood and spend some real time in a non white neighborhood and you'll find it's a whole different ball game. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

There's stuff like that exchange on Sonny Boy and Howlin' Wolf recordings, too. I can't remember if there are similar exchanges between Leonard Chess and Muddy Waters or Jimmy Rogers.
