They split in 1970. How is that '90s music'?
Now, Blues Traveler definitely was 90s music. Popper plays a lot on C, E, F and G(high and low)harps. ----------

No worries, but you're really telling me your age by thinking the Beatles were a 90s group-sorry, that just made me laugh! My 7 year old thinks Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing' is a new song since she saw it on one of the animated movies. Whatever brings you to make new discoveries is good.
There was a somewhat southern rock band called Brother Cane who had a song in the 90s called Got No Shame. I used to cover it, on a D harp, I think. ----------

I think the famous Beatles Love Me Do harp part is in G, but don't quote me on that. Nirvana's cover of Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam has an accordion part that sounds nice on harp. I play it in D when I'm jamming with my guitar player, but I don't know if that's the key they play it in. Could you be more specific? Are you looking for keys or effects?

Still waiting for some specific songs fom you, then I/we can tell you what keys to get. I sang and played in mostly cover bands throughout the 90s, and if it had harp in it, I probably played it. ----------

Honestly, you are going to just have to figure out the key of each song and then try playing that key in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 12th to see which position lays best for the melody. You'll probably sound more "in key" with the recordings if you use an Equal Tuned harp like a golden melody rather than a compromised or JI tuned harp. This is assuming that you want to play the melodies from these songs on harmonica (transpose the guitar lines to harp). If you want to play chords or something over these songs (ie., add new harp lines to these songs as they are), then you can just use any tuning.
On the other hand, you could start getting into bands from the 90's that actually have harmonica in them already. "The The" is a very good place to start. Also try The Smiths (and Morrissey solo stuff), the Catherine Wheel, and tons of other "shoe gazer" music. In the 90's it was not just Blues Traveler that feature harp!
Good luck, and keep us posted!

I used to use a a plug-in for Windows Media Player that found the most likely key for each song. It's not compatible with the newest version of Media Player, but I'm thinking about downloading an old version to use with it. It's called Muse-On. Sometimes it will crash Media Player, but it's a good short cut if you have a lot of songs to key. Then you can add a column to Media Player for song key and list all the keys. You can even sort songs by key so you can play a bunch of songs in a row without having to change harps.

Breakfast at Tiffany's seems to work with a D harp in first position. I should know Teen Spirit off the top of my head, but I can't think of the key. You can always transpose the melody to another harp, although if your playing along with the original that doesn't work as well unless you pitch shift it. What sort of arrangements are you thinking of? ---------- Nate Facebook Thread Organizer
