Hi all, So, I'm looking into buying a new harp. My Hohner GLH is a nice beginners harp, but its just that, a beginners harp. Something to just fool around with or learn on if your a new comer. Time to get a good one. I have one in mind already. The Hohner Marine Band 1896/20 10 hole/20 reed Diatonic. Now my question is this... What key? Im thinking a key of A. I'd like to have one a little bit deeper/lower in pitch. Maybe a B flat?? What do you guys think? Also,is there any one key thats played more then the others? If so,maybe I'll go with that one to start my collection with. Im very much into the old Acoustic Blues of the 20/s & 30's if that helps in which key to buy next. Thanks for any input guys.

G, A, C, and D will cover 90% of the regular stuff youll play... I like the lower keyed harps too, the A and G... ---------- Kyzer's Travels Kyzer's Artwork

It might also depend on who you are studying--a lot of methods use a C--Adam uses a Bb in a lot of his videos. Your favorite harp will be an ever evolving thing--it changes from week to week. . . ----------

Jimmy, check the FAQ's page. (Link to the left, 6th down) Adam covers that question in detail.

I second what Kyzer said. G,A,C and D and Heavy on the A and C if you're playing along with guitar players. You might look into the Big River harps. Some here don't like em' but I do because they're slightly larger then standard, made in Germany and Rockin' Rons Music 4 Less has em' for $22.50 each, you just can't beat that deal. I've pretty much made up my mind that a cheap Chinese harp is a CHEAP Chinese harp weather you pay $5 bucks for it or $15 bucks. IF you're going to get a cheap Chinese harp then just buy the cheapest one you can get, don't waste more money on something that'll not be much better. If you can afford it the Special 20's are a great harp, I've got one in Bb and it plays like a house a fire. JMHO, YMMV. ----------

The A harp is a great harp for playing along with guitar. I think that's a pretty decent choice. You'll probably end up with quite few different keys and even a few different harps in the same key. Never hurts to have too many.LOL ----------
