In some other thread I saw that Hohner is said to be Harmonika company, where harmonika stands for not only the harmonicas but also accordions etc. This was actually quite useful piece of info as I have wondered why the words in Finnish are what they are.

Harmonica in finnish is "Huuliharppu". In english that would mean literally "lip harp". Sometimes it's called just "Harppu" which really means "Harp" (you know, the instrument with lots of strings).

Accordion on the other hand is called "Harmonikka". You can easily see that this is actually lot closer word for harmonica than accordion.

So I have been wondering why is that so and my theory has been that probably it is because Hohner makes both harmonicas and accordions and some Finnish early adopters have just accidentally mixed the words and that's it. Know I think that it is actually because the harmonika has referred to all to these instruments that work with the same principle of reeds&slots that are blown and drawn into.

To make it even more complex we also have "munniharppu", which is I believe, called "mouth harp" in english. You know, the instrument that actually looks a lot like the Harp but has just one vibrating string that uses the mouth cavity as a resonating chamber. Here the terms are actually pretty close as "munni" is derived from the swedish word "mun" = "mouth".

In Afrikaans it's called a "bekfluitjie".

"Bek" is a very crass word for mouth. "Fluitjie" is the diminutive form of "fluit", which means "whistle" (the noun, not the verb).

Roughly in English it would be "little mouth whistle".

In Québec, we have many words for it:

ruine babine
ruine-gueule
brise-babine
(loosely translated all of these give ''lip messer upper'' or ''lip damager'')
...
ruine-moustache (mustache messer-upper)

...

musique à bouche (loosely translated music for mouth)

In Spanish, harmonica is known as armonica (basically leave out the letter H).

I tried posting a list of all the Google translations once, but the forum doesn't support many foreign characters. I ended up taking a screen capture, but that made it so you couldn't cut and paste them in YouTube as text. Here is a link to the file though. If you cut and paste them into YouTube you get whole different sets of videos. You could also put them in hot words for any videos you post, to make it easier for people in other countries to find your stuff. There is a thread around here somewhere where I posted some of the videos I found. Iranian, Greek, Japanese... fun stuff.
