Ok, so I'm looking at my new Hot Metal harp set and I dig out the Blues Band that I got a couple days ago and other then the writing on the cover plates they look like the same dang harp. There's really NO reason to have both so I think I'll clean up the Blues Band and give it to one of my grandsons, not sure which one yet. Also, I'm going to retire the GM so it'll come off of my sig line as well. Hopefully we'll figure out what key to get the BluesMaster in so I can get it ordered today then I'd like to complete my set of Hot Metal harps by getting the Bb and F just to make my OCD personality happy,LOL. ---------- Hohner Harps: Golden Melody in C(bought in '76) Blues Band in C(what else,LOL) Big River in A Hot Metal harps in G, A, C, D,and E

Hohner has a bunch of lower end harmonicas that are all pretty much the same reeds I think, just with different names, and sometimes plastic covers instead of metal.
American Ace The Old Standby Pocket Pal Official Scout Great Little Harp Hot Metal Fuego Azul Piedmont Blues Band (All made in China)
Then they have their higher end harps, made in Germany-
Marine Band based harmonicas- MB, MB Deluxe, MB Crossover, MB Special 20 (I think the GM has the same reeds. It's tuned differently, Equal tuning instead of Just. That's why it's good for playing melodies but sounds rough on chords)
Then they have a bunch of MS series ones- Blues Harp, Big River, Meisterklasse
There are a few other oddballs, but I think that gives a rough comparison.

.....Are "Meisterklasse" reeds the same as Big River? IOW, like all MS reeds? Or are they special? ----------

The ones IN the Meisterklasse are chrome plated but the MS replacement plates are not.

At SPAH, Suzuki was giving away a low end harp called the Easy Rider. I wouldn't even call it a beginner harp...it seemed only good for a young kid as a toy. On the other hand, HarpDepot was giving away lower end Hering harmonicas (seems that they have gone out of business)....I got a C harp that actually OB's on the 4-6 holed out of the box. Still not a high quality harp but miles ahead of the Easy Rider.

Yeah, i got an Easy Rider once for a beater, and boy what a heap of junk! Cover plates were made of aluminum one grade up from Reynold's Wrap.

rule of thumb: on a hohner, if the reeds are made in china, don't buy it. ---------- MP hibachi cook for the yakuza doctor of semiotics superhero emeritus

I plan on using Ron from here on out to buy my harps. He's got better prices then MF(Musician's Friend) and I'd rather cater to a "mom n' pop" then a big chain store any day of the week. Small business is what's made America great. He said my HarpMaster should be here at the end of the week, I'll check it out and do a quick write up on it when it gets here. ---------- Harps: Suzuki HarpMaster in C (on order) Hohner Big River in A Hohner Hot Metal harps in G, A, C, D,and E

I'm going to get a Bb and an F in the Hot Metal harps. Yes, they're cheap(both in price and probably quality) but until I find out which ones I use the most I'll just deal with the Hot Metal harps. Once I see what I'm using the most then I'll order those keys in the HarpMaster from Ron. That way I'll have my "good" harps for serious playin' and a cheap set for messing around with. ---------- Harps: Suzuki HarpMaster in C (on order) Hohner Big River in A Hohner Hot Metal harps in G, A, C, D,and E
