Hey guys! I'm in the market for an amp that sounds 50/50 good with both harp and guitar. I know thats a hefty task for one amp but I figure if I can (you guys too) get a good tone from pa systems, crappy borrowed amps, surely this amp could probably make some decent noise!
Here is a link to the amp that caught my interest. http://www.egnateramps.com/Products/Tweaker/Tweaker112Combo.html
from what I gather 6v6's are the way to go for the tone, but I understand 12" speakers aren't optimal. this amp seems like it may fit my needs as a 20 watt, tube driven,combo,6v6,under 700 bucks.
What do you guys think? anyone ever try em? Thanks
The Egnater Rebel has a thing where you can toggle from two kinds of power tubes. I'd check that one out personally, great guitar amp, I can say that. Plus, it has an attenuator.
Smokey, I posted this in another thread yesterday, however it may be of use to you too, in case you didn't see it.
The Digitech RP355 multi-effects processor (US$200) is designed for guitar effects but Richard Hunter has created a patch set for harp as well.
He hooks it up to a clean keyboard amp (comparatively inexpensive), or hooks it up to the PA. So you can use the unit for either guitar or harp. And you have lots of possibilities in terms of amp sounds as it is an amp modeler essentially. But has other functions including looping capabilities.
Johnnie I don't think the RP355 is a good recommendation.
Smokey has actually picked out an amp with INCREDIBLE specs and flexibility.
Having an attenuator and all those other options to alter the wattage and gain is a BIG WIN. RP355 as an alternative recommendation? FAIL. It is inferior to the Egnater on so many levels when you think of the context.
Richard Hunter is a badass who can make anything work for him. But he's not really a blues guy, meaning, it's not his bread and butter to play blues. Just because he uses this Digitech unit doesn't mean it's good enough for a blues guy who is used to playing with real tube amps.
Gosh, the bands I jam with are just soooooo freakin loud they have no concept of stage volume and mic'ing amps to let the pa handle the projection to the house! So here I am, broke as a joke and everyone I know is telling me bigger is better, get a bassman get a bassman get a bassman!
Then I come here and everyone is like "dude, get a small amp and crank it!!" Which I totally understand, I mean I would rather not go deaf throwing out inferior tone in a mass of loudness just cause everyone is loud. I would rather spend my cheese (what little I have) on a small HG2 or a delicious Swart "space tone" and mic it!
what to do.... what to do...
chek out this amp! drop dead gorgeous imo... http://swartamps.com/amplifiers_tweed_tone_6v6se.htm
I went to Dave Barrett's Harmonica Master Class earlier this year and he had an amp comparison session where Gary Smith and Dennis Gruenling played through over 30 different amps (small to large) using both CM and Chrystal microphones.
One of Gary's amp was a 20 watt Egnator and it sounded great for harp. He mentioned that the amp was a great buy for the types of tubes that it had in it and that there was the ability to tweek the settings.
If you signup to be part of www.bluesharmonica.com, which I highly reccommend, there is video of Gary playing the amp and talking about it. Well worth the $16.95 per month.
Awesome video interviews, information on Amps, Microphones and great lessons as well.
I've owned the Egnator half stack for over a year now. For guitar it's tough to beat, for harp it's very good. I'm able to get fat or clean tone out of the amp for harp. It will get fairly loud before feedback. I almost gave up on the amp for harp, until I set the amp using Gary Smith's settings. I haven't used the amp live for harp since I own several great harp amps.
Gary uses a Epiphone cab, and a RI P12R with his rig. I tried it with different cabs using vintage C12Q, and a vintage P12Q, both a little better than the stock speaker for harp, but the stock egnator cab is still very good for harp.
For guitar you can't beat the egnator cab, and stock speaker. I've tried several guitar speaker cabs with the Egnator, Reverend, Eminence, etc: nothing beats the 14" deep cab, and stock speaker for guitar.
I did it... I appreciate all your help guys I am now a proud owner of a Swart Amps, Space Tone 6v6se! I'll try to post some pics. it sounds killer, just plain bad ass! I'm using a Sure commando 425.
