I still have some fond memories opening for him back in the mid 90's at Gilrein's in Worcester, MA. One of these days, I'll get around to recording an instrumental tribute I've been performing dedicated to him called "The Clarke Bar."

What's the best way to buy Williams recordings so as to make sure that his heirs get maximum benefit from the sale?

Love to hear The Clarke Bar.
Great guy I learned a lot from. He would always take time to talk when he was in town. Got my mic set up like his. When I play a CD of his my wife always stops and say's,
"now THAT'S William Clarke.
It's her veiled dig on Rod Piazza.

...and ditto on:

My all time personal favorite album of his is Tip Of The Top.

@Littoral --- It's a jazzy feeling tune that's more like Greasy Gravy and one other tune that was on his 2nd Alligator album (the title escapes me at the moment) done on a Bb 12 hole chromatic played in the key of C. That's about all the hints I'm gonna give on that for now.

Hello Lollipop Mama...(Jeanette)
When Bill was here in Atlanta at the old Blues Harbor back in 1989-1990 he visited with me at my house for a few days and I gave him the Atlanta "tour" of blues history, etc etc.
When he got back out there he sent me a tape with a good deal of conversation on it (him talking), you can even hear that bird you guys had chirping in the background. This was right before you guys sent out that Christmas card with him holding Gina, I think.
Maybe you'd like to have that tape back as a keepsake?
I'll send it to you if you want me to.
Just contact me on my email site dbush7@bellsouth.net and tell me the address, etc etc.
Glad to hear that you're doing well...we haven't been out that way in years.
Regards,
Doug "JoeLee" Bush

Found this photo of WC and George Smith. Jeannette, can you share a story or two about Bill's relationship with George?

So I’m cooking supper. The cable Blues channel is on in the background. I hear a tune with harp that I really like but have not heard before... it is William Clarke Pawnshop bound. I am now a fan.

Your husband made a huge difference in my playing and I have appreciated his style and chops for some years now. From all I can tell he was a really cool guy and got along with most everyone he crossed paths with.

I am glad to have gotten to say this to you Jeanette, I only wish I could have thanked him!

I hope you feel welcome to post here any time. Obviously you have friends here!

Hello Jeannette-- Greetings from the frozen North, otherwise known as Canada. I wish I could say I knew your husband personally, because I would have loved to have met and talked to him. I can only say he spoke to me, as he spoke to millions, musically. I have all his CDs. My favorite song is "Respect Me, Baby".

Here's the All Music Guide description of your husband and his music. I have read it many times in my paper version of the All Music Guide to Blues, which remains my Bible for learning about the blues world and its musicians. I agree with every word:

"The heir apparent to Chicago's legacy of amplified blues harmonica, William Clarke was the first original new voice on his instrument to come along in quite some time; he became a sensation in blues circles during the late '80s and early '90s, stopped short by an untimely death in 1996. A pupil and devotee of George Harmonica Smith, Clarke was a technical virtuoso and master of both the diatonic harp and the more difficult chromatic harp (the signature instrument of both Smith and Little Walter). Where many new harmonica players had become content to cop licks from the Chicago masters, Clarke developed his own style and vocabulary, building on everything he learned from Smith and moving beyond it. His four '90s albums for Alligator earned wide critical acclaim and remain his signature showcases."

Thanks for putting your hand up and speaking in this mostly male forum; don't let us scare you away.

Cheers,

wolf kristiansen

Bumps have always confused me too - instead of just writing "bump" - it should be mandatory for the perpetrator of the bump to fully explain themselves in no less than 50 words...That said - there seemed to be unfinished business, I can't put my finger on it...maybe I was hoping Jennette would magically reappear and start contributing to the forum on a daily basis. Or, maybe I was curious what else might be added to the abruptly ended thread 2 years later by new and old members. But - now I know why the thread was resurrected from its resting place - it needed Tom to contribute some of Bills tunes :)

@tmf714: many thanks tom for those brilliant recordings.

Bill Clarke is one of a very few harp players I could listen to all night and never get tired of listening to. His phrasing is just awesome and that tone of his wraps around me like warm honey.

I got Jeannettes permission to post those 3 tunes on the "William Clarke Remembered" site on Facebook-I found those on one of my old torrent sites-that came from an old blues radio show that also featured Charlie Musselwhite.
