...So, I'm out scrounging a local thrift store. We have this weekly color code for the invite Blues blast. For those that come attired in that weeks edition, there is a free drawing for a bottle of wine. As part of the host band, I come in the weekly hue.
This week is "Checks and Plaid" . Can you say WILD & CRAZY ?
So I have NO checks OR plaids in my wardrobe. Go to the thrift store and find a blue plaid shirt for 2.25 and a checkered jacket for .25 ! Covered.
Then, I look around and see an unopened mic in plastic blister. Designed for karaoke machine and labeled M TV. Attached cheater cord. $7.00 . I figure...what the heck...I've wasted more on bad cheap harps and lottery. So, I buy it. I get to the gig tonight and check it out. MAN ! Sucker is HOT, but NO feedback ! Very lightweight..plastic...on/off switch, AND rated 100K - 12,000K . No high end squealing///feedback issues. VERY Bluesy...easy distortion .
I had pro's coming up and asking me what I did for my sound a

That's odd. It posted without my knowing.
Anyway, people liked it.
Tonight...played for our regulars and a special party including Ann Curry of the Today Show.

I've always liked Ann Curry on the Today Show. She seems like a "down to earth" type person.

I really dig these kind of stories. I once lucked out on an ebay purchase and picked up a nice Shure dynamic mic for $20. Of course, I dropped it and dented the metal around the connector.
So, it went off to Mr Heumann for "Ultimatization".

Joe_L ..I think you and I would get along. Most harpers are a brotherhood that share, converse, and help bring good music into other peoples lives. I have had misfortune to run into two harmonica players that were jerks. One had been at one time a fairly decent player, but let booze and nose candy rule his world. Shame was, he was a good player when sober, and genuinely friendly. Trouble was he was seldom sober. He died hard, broke, and practically friendless except for parasites that stole his gear.
Another harmonica snob went goofy on me when I gently suggested he back up his vintage amp handle. The assclown got all huffy/arrogant on me, so I said in my unique Chicaga mafia vernacular, "FUGGEDABOUTIT, PALLY".
I later heard the AC was late to a gig, and rushing in, picked up the amp by the handle. Handle breaks in two, amp drops to concrete. No more amp. Irony and justice.

Isn't that a great feeling when you find a mic(or anything else, for that matter)that costs peanuts and has very little optimism attached to it, then you try it out and WOW! I was looking at EV RE10 mics a while back since mine was dead in the water, and got a strange Google response that was an Ebay link to a EV 631B...I usually ignore such things, but clicked it on a whim. Never heard of it, so I did some research, and kept watching it. No one bid, so I scored it for the starting price plus a dollar-20 bucks! I love this mic now.
P.s.-Little Joe, we're gonna need to see some pics of you in this checks and plaid getup.

That's one thing with a 'deal'-you gotta pounce as soon as you see it, if you're lucky enough to see it first! I'm seldom that lucky. ----------

upstate- I recently had a very nice mic ripped off from my truck. It is very possible that such a good deal on harps and case was someones loss.

If someone on CL or elsewhere has that much gear for sale at once, and the description sounds like they have no clue of what it is, chances is re it's ripped off.
'I have 40 harmonicas, have Hohner written on them, and different letter stickers on top of each one, in a case. Also what looks like a Model A Ford headlight attached to a long cord. Take it all for 50 bucks-cash only.' ----------

Talking about good scores, one of my musical friends found an Armaco M131 microphone gathering dust in a church basement he was renovating. I don't know how to post photos on the forum, but you can see a picture here:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=252740
It's a Japanese Crystal mic, also known as Argonne AR-54, Argonne M131, Herald M24a, Fentone, Olson, Calrad, Primo M131, etc. It's also known as the "Big Walter Mic", I guess because he was photographed using one. (Aside-- we tone freaks worship microphones just because an old player was photographed using one, even though it might be one of dozens he used over his career; kind of funny)
My friend asked the preacher if he could have it, the preacher agreed. My friend gave it to me, knowing that I like, in his words, "old, ugly microphones".
Anyways, I fired it up with my modified Blues Deluxe, and it sounds sweet. Sounds just as good as my 60s Astatic JT30.
I intend to do what I did with my JT30-- drill a hole in the end of the mic, and install a volume pot. It's collectability will be totally destroyed, but I never buy gear for looks (couldn't care less), only for sound.
I got my Blues Deluxe for next to nothing because the previous owner let his cat use it for a scratching post. It looks pretty sad, but sounds great.
Cheers,

Now, you just have to sculpt a story::: "MAN, you should see the CAT that had this before me ! "
I went scrounging today and picked up THREE more of these cheap karaoke machine mic's: One is a no-name silver with a skinny 8' cheater cord. Another is a silver "The Singing Machine" with a thicker 8' cord (which is prolly just heavier rubber). The third is a grey Radio Shack 33-3018 dynamic microphone 500 0hm witha 22' cheater cable. All work GREAT, but the RS is incredibly hot. All are ball mic's, so I mod them by taping a cut down spice jar plastic shaker head over the top of the element. Makes them more harp friendly...muddier and hyper-directional. All have simple on/off switches ...no volume pots.
Only drawback appears to be that these cheapos were fastened with super glue. No way to take apart to scavenge componentswithout completely trashing the shell. I was hoping to be able to do this, as I have a cool looking brushed aluminum shell and grille that would be a great looking harp mic. Th element in it has continuity, but I can't get it to work on anything.
OH...paid $6.75 for all three mic's today. Think I'll keep the hot R/S with the 22' cord, and gift some other harpist friends with the others.
