The father of one of my students sent this link to me. It looks like there are many interesting articles that relate to what we all do and touch on how some of us carry ourselves.

I've only glanced at the site and won't have time to read it for a couple of weeks. If you do have the opportunity to read some of the article please post your comments.

A lot of artist of different disciplines seem to
have emotional problems because of their sensitivity.
I think it's self medication. Some seem to function ok
others it seems to shut them down.

Ya, Chris doesn't have any emotional problems because he's too busy deriving the inner peace and bliss that comes from finishing off his Buddha harp orders and getting them in the mail before he heads out of town.
Right???? :)

So...if I drink a lot of Guinness while cooking dinners will that make me a gourmet chef? Or just add to the girth?

I’m one of the weirder people I know but I'm not especially dangerous, so no need to warn anyone. Generally I find most things about life humorous and I enjoy joking about it. I’m into love, laughter & silliness and not too much into hatred, fear, etc but I do have an appreciation for all emotions.

I could have never done much musically without the help and support of my lovely wife, two wonderful daughters and a lot of very talented musicians, who have helped me out tremendously along the way and who have inspired me to keep doing this music thing. Thanks y'all!

I used to drink a lot more, but through practice I'm getting better at getting what I need in third-position sober.

I'm not gonna pretend I've got anything like an answer but can strongly relate, it's a question that entertains my mind every day as I can see both sides.......don't ask my wife as she is strongly on your side Walter and I sort of know she's right but.......I like the idea of self medication, but what for do I need medication!?.....hmmmmmm.......I just know IT makes me feel alright, and opens up some sort of 'elusive' highway of some sorts, but I don't want to jeapordize my marriage as I'm also blessed with a comfortable existance!? Jeeez,...I think ONE of the keys is the moderation thing but...sorry I'm just raving on a bit as yes tonight I've gone down the beer/wine avenue.......(and yes Buddha you've struck a chord!).... :>)

If it's good enough for Beethoven... :-)

Absinthe? Pleasant indeed, but on our USA trip the wife of an eminent harmonicist introduced us and our 200 blissful daughters to your own excellent semi-local equivalent, Mezcal, from just south of the border. Pleasant in the extreme!... Sadly, it proved difficult to obtain elsewhere.

"But do drugs enhance creativity?" I'd say the answer could vary depending on the state of the person asked. Maybe we should run a double blind drunk test on this fascinating question at SPAH?

I'd like to try Mezcal, and eat the worm of course... I already drank absinthe more than once, and my parents bought a bottle of it recently with all the accessories, so I expect to try it soon the traditional way... But at the time of Rimbaud and Verlaine, the composition of absinthe included a psychotropic plant wich is not anymore in the absinthe that is made today.

I don't think drugs can enhance creativity, but some have effects on imagination : see poets and writers like Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Thomas de Quincey, Lewis Carroll... their visions were obviously influenced or revealed by drugs, but their talent as writers is another thing.

A little drinking, or maybe a joint, before playing, may help to fight nervosity and feel confident onstage, of course it's a matter of quantity, and not everybody needs it...

I usually drink some beer before playing (and after), sometime I used to smoke weed but I stopped, not so good when you need to focus.

Oh, and I think the out of place is Julius Verne, because that guy doesn't exist (the great french writer, father of the science-fiction, was Jules Verne).

Depends on the person, the drug, the amount - and who's listening.

A little alcohol can loosen an uptight self-conscious player up and help get him/her rolling. One drink too many and brilliance can turn to slop. And as we always used to tell our audience - "the drunker you get - the better we sound". Looking for Sonny Boy's quote on drinking - I'll get back to you when I find it.

Pot - can make some uptight, others loose - others 'normal' cause it's their default condition anyway. I like to jam and do improvisational practicing on it (not scales) - It seems to help me 'get into it' and I try different things - not all of which sound good on tape later Some ideas I do end up liking and I incorporate them into my playing. Wouldn't do it on a gig unless we're talking a loose late night third set. Also sucks for engineering which I often have to do while playing / recording.

shrooms - In my youth I credited shrooming with opening the top of the harp up for me. No way to validate that assumption of course.

Old Hippie (and quasi Plato) philosophy of music, sports, learning and life:

Perfection - of playing an instrument, shooting a basketball - or whatever, exists , as if hovering in the ether. The form is there if we could tap into it, or get our minds out of the way of distracting us from it. To some extent what athletes mean by 'getting in the Zone'. At the time I thought that mushrooms got 'me' out of the way - and let me tap into what was already there.

from the wiki page on Plato's 'the good':
"to Plato, true knowledge is conversant, not about those material objects and imperfect intelligences which we meet within our daily interactions with all mankind, but rather it investigates the nature of those purer and more perfect patterns which are the models after which all created beings are formed."

I agree with hvyj... ;)

I've practiced 12th position soberness since 2002 and it has only opened my creativity in everything I do. Another thing that I've realized is that also the emotional side has matured as I've had to start actually working with that instead of escaping to the "chemical equalizators". Nowadays I'm getting good at the other positions of soberness too. If somebody needs extra boost on imagination, I'd go for the dreams. If you spend just a little bit of time with the dreamwork you will open up a door to a endless resource for images and symbols - no need to involve extra chemicals there.
