Here's a little transcription of Louis Armstrong's great trumpet solo on Hotter Than That from the 1927 Hot Fives sessions. Played in 12th position on a Bb Hohner Crossover harmonica.
It's a great lesson in articulation since Satchmo plays everything so clearly and rhythmically. There's only a couple overblows needed (just 6 overblow) but it's there are tricky parts like jumping bigger intervals and consecutive 3 hole draw bends. I'm double tonguing to get that phrase on 0:22 (saying ta-ka-ta-ka while changing the bend on 3 hole draw)
on can learn almost everything one needs to know about jazz solo'ing from Louis - just transcribe his solos and play along!
Would like to hear this with the harmonica up front in the sound rather than buried to where it's almost impossible to hear - even though it is doubling pretty well the trumpet. ---------- The Iceman
12th position and Armstrong tunes go well together.
