I'm pretty sure quite a while ago I read here about the admiration for the harp solo/noise john mayall makes on the song room to move.Really.
Well.the solo with no overblows or draws played mainly on the lower part of the harp mainly draw notes is not really high end.Hearing years ago as a kid I could play it straight away, but was put off by the weird huffing and puffing that you would never replicate as the struggle to be taken seriously with the harp is bad enough without the huff puff.similarly sonny terry with his whoops got on my nerves as well even though he was one of the best(in his day)

I agree with the whoops getting on my nerves - like when someone says "Oh, you play harmonica? Do that "train" thing"..

However, when I matured a bit more, these sounds stopped getting on my nerves so much as a realization that this type of playing just wasn't for me...it's pretty retro and those fans of pre WW II playing seem to really like them.

The John Mayall Room to Move stuff did and still is enjoyable - it's got that relentless forward momentum groove that exists between the breaths. Even getting into those mouth sounds he makes when I first heard it helped me with developing my own internal groove.

I respect both those icons for their artistry, and long professional careers. I also ikeir playing styles. They were both ground breakers in their time and in their way. That said, I do not listen to either of them 24/7. I tend to “rediscover” each of them from time to time and always pick up a little something more from their respective playbooks.

Room to Move was Mayall's peak as a harmonica player.
Someone asked me if I played train sounds on the harmonica, and I said I did. He needed train music for a song he was recording. We did the session, and ten minutes later I had fify dollars cash. I was 20 years old.

Well, along your path to becoming a true harmonica virtuoso you will have to become at least as good as both of those guys. Be carful not to let the fame and fortune distract you.

Personally, I am very happy to see sharpharp posting again. It's always educational.

He is the best. Or maybe one of the best? He is pretty good on harmonica.
