This might be pushing the boundaries of harmonica-related topics, but I could use a little advice on a project I want to undertake.

I have a great 12-harp leather case from Pinegrove, but for gigs where I'm playing guitar, mandolin *and* harp, I usually only have a handful of harps with me. Additionally, the Pinegrove case is too large to fit into other instrument cases.

Sooo, I have this nifty little faux leather case that came with a shortwave radio, and the dimensions are perfect for housing 5, maybe even 6 harmonicas. Not being very handy, though, I'm not sure how to go about building/assembling something to keep the harmonicas in place. Slots, troughs, or whathaveyou.

Anyone have suggestions?

I'm thinking the lightest and perhaps easiest way would be to have some elastic "ribbon" sewn into the liner. Go on Amazon and look at photo of Lee Oscar 7 piece harp pouch or Rockin Ron's and look at Seydel soft case for photo examples of what I'm suggesting.

That's what I did with my short pack (holds 9 harps and fits in my lap steel case). I went to the fabric store and bought a roll of elastic about 1.5" wide. I cut a piece off and sewed each end to the fabric just below the zipper teeth on each end. I wish I could remember what I did with the rest of the roll, I'd just send you a piece.

I've used the standard Fender tweed type case for years now. It holds all I need plus spares for a full night. Plus I just added a Shaker mic and cable with IMT and it's all a fit.

I was thinking stitched or glues cloth, suede, or thin leather strips for that case.

I would lay a peice of closed cell foam in there cut to fit snug. Set the harps in then trace around the harps with a sharpie. Next, cut out the harp holes with a ravor knife. Stuff the foam in the case then load her up.

I have a little digital camera bag that I can stuff 8 harps (Marine Bands) into. I'm always on the lookout at the thrift stores.

@Barley Nectar good call, I think that's probably the way to go! Michael's, here we come.

@jbone I too love my Fender tweed harp case. I'm bringing it on the road for my band's tour this week, but when I'm playing in NYC, I gotta lug around a guitar and a mando on the subway, and I only realistically need a few harps, so I'm trying to get those to fit in the other instrument cases.

Not sure whether you want to take pleasure in the building or whether that case means something to you.

However, if you just want a little harp case that will keep your stuff safe check out the kongsheng cases on eBay.

They do a 3 and a 7 harp case. The 3 has better shaped hole for my Manjis, the 7 only has slots. I bought the 3 for my car harps. Liked it so ordered two of the 7s. A little disappointed by the difference but at under £4 and £8 I'm not complaining.

Hands down, don't look anywhere else, get the hard foam cut for you to whatever your specifications are. We've discussed this here with pics and links but I can't look for it just now. Todd Parrot initiated the thread.

Just got my foam insert from MyCaseBuilder. Had to shave off about 1/2" of foam from the base of the unit, as the company can't make inserts that narrow. It's not perfect (I won't show you the underside), but it does work pretty darn well, and I can actually fit 7 harps in here! Now I just need to figure out which harp to pick for my 7th (F, Bb, C, G, D, and A are easy choices for the first six). Still got my leather case for 12 harps if I need it, but this one'll be nice to have for vacations and such as it won't take up much space in my luggage but I can pack a variety of harps for practice.

It was an expensive solution at 40-something bucks, but I also added the 7 or 8 dollar "do-over" fee in case I got the dimensions wrong.

I’d go with G. I use it a lot in 3rd position when band calls Am.

@ME.HarpDoc oh definitely G, I included it in my list of keys before (I should've listed them more clearly...C, G, D, A, F, Bb).

Low D or low F depending on need. Maybe an Eb?

@jbone that’s a good call on the Eb, probably what I’ll do. The only F I have is actually a Low F. At some point I should get a low E or low D.

You’re kind. My wife says I don’t see what’s right under my nose. This confirms it :-)
