Here is a way to make any stick mic easier to hold and help avoid hand cramps. Simply use a turkey baster bulb, available at most supermarkets for under $3. Modify the bulb by cutting a clean, round hole slightly smaller than the mic's top diameter in the center of the top of the bulb. I found it easiest to punch cut the rubber out. The top of a cheapo metal broomstick with its tip removed worked well for me, just insert the broom stick in the bulb, center it and pound from the top where the brush would be screwed on. Couple of punches, maybe a slight twist left and right and the rubber should be cut clean.

Next, moisten the outside of the mic near the bottom. Slide the bulb up over the shaft of the mic, the cut hole leading. As it nears the larger diameter of the top of the mic, the bulb will begin to curl in on itself and stick to the shaft. Keep pushing the bulb up until you have the desired "cup" that is made by the curled-in bulb. Voila, one "BASTER BLASTER".

This mod conforms to any grip, is great for smaller hands that have difficulty getting a good cup otherwise. The resulting cup that is formed is sort of cone-shaped and the threads of the bulb taper down nicely and add just enough rubber to really be able to get a good, controllable grip on the mic. The bulb is very light and they come in different colors, shapes and degrees of pliability. I found the brand "Good Cook" to be perfect, cost me $1.78 at a chain supermarket.

I modded an AKAI DM13 and an AMPEX 2001. The AKAI DM13 is the better of the two. This mod should help a lot of people. Try it out, let me know how you like it. CHEERS !!!

This sounds like something dirty you might read on Reddit...

I need to update the forum how to. Photobucket seems to be making it so you can't post the pics with HTML, just the links.

GARRY, Thanks for the kudos. Yes, it is an incredibly simple fix for cheap. If you are among the many who have troubles sometimes holding stick mics such as a SHURE SM57, AKAI DM13 or similarly-shaped mics, then this is a quick fix. It could be a smart thing to have in one's bag of gear in the event that one's preferred mic craps out and all that is left are the SHURE SM57 vocal mics. Simply slide on a baster and problem solved and easily reversible.

In recent months there have been at least two new harp mics introduced to the market and they too use the modified cone shape. Both appear to offer a bit of a cup within the mic as well. What my idea doesn't offer is a volume control but that's another small detail.

Nacoran, if you could comment here on how I could better post photos, please do. I figure y'all can figure out how to make the baster blaster. Cheers !!!
