I picked 1 of these up for ~$48 at a Thrift Store Yesterday. It looked like it had spent it's life in a closet. It's a modeling amp. 11 amps, 11 effects, an AX7 in the pre-amp and an 8" speaker. As soon as I can build a cabinet I'm going to try to use it to drive some Alnicos,(1)15" & (2)8", I pulled out of a Hammond organ. That's about the only way it can be of any use to me. It may just sap all the power out of it.

I wonder what opinions on VOX Valvetronix amps are floating around out there in Harmonicaland. I have only tested it with a Green Bullet to make certain everything worked.

I own a Vox Valvetronix, 40-60 Watts.
It can make quite a bit of noise -- but it´s not really my kind of noise: Way too hard.
I´m considering if some kind of tube pre-amp could help with that, and I will try, but probably I´ll sell it.

I am just getting into the reading, but I think all of the Valvetronix series amps have an AX7 in the pre-amp.

Mine seems to prefer my DM13 mic over the green bullet. I changed out the speaker to one of the Hammond (Heppner?) 8 Alnico's. I'm still experimenting.

"AX7"? I´m not big on the tech stuff, I´m afraid. There´s supposed to be some built in tube preamp but it doesn´t do a whole lot for me.

Also, while Googling I see that many Valvetronix have modeling options -- not so for mine. Yet another reason for getting rid of it perhaps.

I almost never use bullet mics so I understand your choice in that department.
Changing speakers is really of an out-of-this-world character for me, but please let us know if you find success.

The AX7 is pretty much "THE" pre-amp tube in most tube amps. Through the little I have read on these Valvetronix amps, VOX is running the input through the AX7 to get some tube effects, but they are running it at a lower than normal voltage resulting in long tube life. I am a little wary of putting too much into a 15W solid state amp because just about everywhere I get to play amped I am competing with much louder guitar amps.

I was hoping to find a loyal following to validate my impulse purchase, but it looks like it's you and me.

Not sure about the fairly old AD series, but more recent Vox modeling amps use the AX7 not in the preamp stage, which is digital, but as effectively a 1 watt amplifier in the power stage, which is then made loud by a clean digital amplifier circuit.

I've used Vox modeling amps (VT30 and VT80) for years, and they're terrific. Try the AC30 or AC15 models with a little delay and/or chorus.

Garry, I understood the AC amps are all tube. Did you mean something else?

@SuperBee: I was referring to the ACxx models on the VT series modeling amps.

Now that you've mentioned the AC series...a slight pivot on this thread:

Have any of you played through a Vox AC15 or AC10??? I am looking to buy an amp to use mainly with guitar, but it would be nice if it were also harp-friendly, and I could use it for both instruments.

The "newish" AC10 C1 Custom seems like a really great guitar amp. It has a small cabinet and is nearly as loud as an AC15. The closed back cab apparently gives it a stronger bass performance than either the AC15 or the AC4. It seems to stack up very favorably against a Fender Blues Jr. or Pro Jr., at a lower price, plus it is smaller/lighter than the Fenders. (It is even less expensive than the Super Champ X2). I am just wondering if that "Vox sound" is too shrill for harp...
