So I have been pleasantly surprised with the Fender Champion 20 as a harp amp. Using the "Bassman" setting and the other knobs tweaked to whichever mic I'm using, it is easy to forget I'm playing a solid state amp.

I was curious about whether it would sound even better with a 10" speaker, so I rigged a lead wire and connected it to a few speakers I have in other amps. I left the 10" speakers in their existing cabs (my Kalamazoo and Bassman) as the Champion 20 won't actually accommodate a 10" speker as far as I can tell. Here were the speakers I tried:

* Weber 10A125-O with H dustcap
* Eminence 1028k
* Blue frame speaker from 90's era bassman

All the 10" speakers sounded better than the 8" Fender factory speaker, although it certainly doesn't sound bad. The 10's delivered more bottom end and more musical chords and double-stops.

My favorite of the bunch was the Eminence 1028k because its darker character balanced out some of the brightness in the amp. I doubt I'll build a custom cabinet for the Champion 20 to fit a 10" speaker, but if I had a cabinet laying around that would work, I would definitely do it.

Also, my local guitar player buddy owns a Champion 40, which I tried and thought it sounded better than my Champion 20, with a nicer sound due to the 12" speaker.

I wonder how the Champions and Mustangs compare? They seem to be very close to the same thing.

i have a question for you... look on the back of the speaker cone, there is a yellow part. that is the suspension. is the one on the blue frame smaller? or is it the same size as tha 1028k speaker? how does the weber compare?

For the Fender Mustang line you can purchase a Richard Hunter patch set. This download to the amp, transforms the presets to harmonica friendly models of tube amps. Cost is only $1.00 a preset depending on the mustang model you own. I have a Mustang II. Used amp was $150.00. Patch set $20.00. I like it.

Good question about the suspension...I am away on family vacation but will try to remember to check it out when I get at home and reply.

@1847: I couldn't get a very good look at the yellow suspension parts without removing the speakers from the amps, which I did not feel like doing tonight. Based on feeling around inside each speaker, I got the impression that the blue frame had the smallest, softest, and most acoustically live suspension, followed by the 1028k, which probably had larger suspension, and the 10A125-O, which I believe had the largest suspension relative to the magnet enclosure part. This comparison was based on putting my finger in there and feeling around, not real measurements, so I could be mistaken.

Does the yellow suspension part have a significant effect on the tonal qualities of the speaker?
