This is the cheapest, usable setup I could assemble. 1 mike, 1 cable, 1 amp. The amp has XLR input so no adapter needed. And Amazon is now selling its own branded cables. The amp has a 8" speaker which I think is the minimum for "usable". About $125 total. May sound like crap. But that Pyle mic is my favorite.

Would love to see some other store-bought cheap rigs.

@1847 That's right! I won't have to buy the AmazonBasics brand.

Yes, but it's an XLR-1/4" cable so it will be a low impedance output going into the hi-impedance input and may not give good results.

The advantage of the Behringer amp is it's XLR input. The disadvantage is it's an amplifier for acoustic instruments so may not be very good for harmonica. Depending on what you want of course.

How about a Fender Champion 20 for similar cost? I've not tried that one, but if it's like it's bigger versions (40,100) it could have enough gain on one of it's 'voices' to let you use the XLR-1/4" cable.

@MTG I've never used one of these acoustic amps with XLR input - but another cool one is the Fender Acoustasonic which is a 2 x 6" .

This Behringer also has a 1/4" TS input, so I could use that as an option.

The 1/4" input is high impedance. I assume, it would be odd if not. So with the low gain typical on an acoustic-instrument amp, likely not to work very well unless you have an IMT on the mic. Which is fine, but some more expense, and this is about 'how low can you go' :)

I don't think these kind of amps are meant to overdrive, so if you want a clean sound that may be fine. Mic on a stand for instance. But it you want to cup the mic and overdrive sound, it's pot luck. Whereas the Fender Champions are intended to overdrive and have models for that. So, you know, good to choose the right tool for the job.

If you tried it in a shop and it worked, that's all good. But buying online may bring disappointment.

@MTG I do like the clean sound. But now that you mention it, I might be able to try it at Guitar Center - I could even bring my mic. Definitely an experiment.

The rig I started with was a garage sale Park GR10 (I think it's the same as the Marshall G10), and a discount bin used Shure Prologue (cheap version of the 57, with an on/off switch.) It came with the cord and I was up and running for $40. :)

Garage sales rock! (And I got a Princeton amp in the deal too. That had some issues though. Gave it to a friend to see if he could get it sorted out and get some use out of it.)

I nwver knew about the Shure Prologue - thing looks cool.

I just went to GC and they have a bunch of used bass amps that look tempting including a TC Electronics 2x8.

This is the mic part: Pyle mic, Behringer Bass OD, and Audix adapter. I didn't realize the Audix adapter was engineered for amps - it's more like an actual reamp box.

Pyle mic: $12
Audix adapter: $17
OD pedal: $25

Still haven't decided on an amp, but probably a new solid state bass amp with overdrive for $100. My experience with the OD pedals is that you still need OD on the amp. Combining the two ODs is how the magic happens.

My Prologue is broken right now- just the top piece. I've got a spare top from another one that has a bad connector, but I can't figure out how to get the parts off! (I think maybe it's pressed on but I'm nervous of breaking it.)

I like it. I've also got a Bulletini, which is a great mic, but a little too hot for my amp.

I don't have much experience with cheap rigs, but I've tried quite a few acoustic amps. I always play harp through an XLR style stick mic. In my experience, the best tone for harp is achieved using an IMT and plugging into the 1/4" input, NOT the XLR input.

@hvyj I agree. I am definitely going for an overdriven amp sound, so that means treating the guitar amp like a guitar amp. I discovered that I love Peavey's overdrive sound in their solid state amps, so I think I'll get a Peavey bass amp with overdrive. For a solid state amp, the Peavey's have a nice buttery OD. And cheap!

I use an old 1970s shure pe 40 mic that I traded a seydel session steel for and a fender chamion 20 amp with a sennheiser 609 mic running to a American audio powered speaker.sometimes I gig through marshall valvestate 100 combo amp if I want to remove some windows. I know what you're thinking , theres no way I can keep the feedback down ,' jim McBride of bottle of blues, suggested I switch to a 12at7 preamp tube. he's a genius , worked great. speaking of mr. McBride , i'm currently waiting for my BoB to arrive.

I got a Prologue mic once with a mic stand, for like $15 all, at a flea market. I saw why quickly, the mic was never a great sound. Maybe with a delay or something it would have been better.
