I've been given a Hohner Blues Blaster that is in pretty much like new condition, but isn't working because the XLR plastic connector that carries the 3 pins has cracked allowing 2 pins to slide back into the shell.
The mic is functional with the connector loose so you can make sure the pins don't slide out but that's not an option for playing but the mic is clearly working.
The chrome fitting that takes the XLR internals is difficult to see if it's a press fit or if its threaded. Can anyone tell me how that chrome barrel is fitted fitted to the shell. I don't think it's threaded?
I was also planning on converting it to a switchcraft 2501MP
Do these mics use the same shell as the Astatic mics?
Is is worth changing out all the hardware and putting in a new element, volume control. If so I'd appreciate advice on what element to go for and what volume control.
I guess it would need a new gasket too?
Cheers JG

The chrome barrel is glued in; you may find the you can get a new plastic insert for the XLR, which would be the easiest fix. If you have got an MC151 or 127 element then I'd leave it as is. If it's the small kobitone Japanese element, then I'd be inclined to fit a CM element and new gasket. There's no real advantage to fitting a 2501MP over the XLR. Removing the chrome barrel can be done by fixing it in a vice (don't put the shell in the vice!) If you want to mount a 2501MP in the hole that was used for the volume control then it needs to be built up for threads or tapped for a bushing to take the 2501MP. I have done this myself, but have access to the right tools. 100k to 250k volume pot for the CM. 1-5 meg for a crystal.

Hi Bruce, I was able to buy an XLR plastic insert and have been able to fix the mic.
Anyone have any suggestions who or where to look for a CM element?
Cheers JG

the blues blaster came with a 151 crystal element. the volume pot should be changed to 5 meg. the earlier ones came with the wrong value pot.

all the cool kids use crystal elements.
who are you main influences? what mic do they use? i think there are 2 camps
CM and crystal. i would start with what my favorite harp players use, and then decide
which element i would choose.

Greg Heuman also has elements and gaskets. He does top notch repair/rebuild as well as beautiful work from scratch.
