The Seydel Big Six is a popular model for players wanting just the main meat-and-potatoes lower 6 holes of a Richter harp. I recently had some enquiries about putting two Big Sixes together on one comb to combine a couple of keys, or make a specialist chord harmonica.

Having two Big Sixes on the same comb opens many possibilities, since each Big Six can be specially tuned in Seydel's Configurator.
I liked the concept, so have created a 3D printed PowerComb to do the job. All you do is disassemble two Big-Sixes and put the parts straight on; they will fit perfectly.

This new combo-harp even got given a prospective name in an earlier thread here on MBH: The Dirty Dozen! I like it :-) Here are the comb details, and below a link to Seydel's Big Six page (cut and paste in your browser to open links):

Can you elaborate about the possibilities of the specialist chord harmonica?

You could set it up to play I7 VI7 II7 V7 very easily for example with C and D big sixes. And that would give you your I IV V Blues harmony as well.

Nice idea. You could also have say a D and G Big Six, which would give you 2nd and 3rd position for the key of A. That would be cool. Likewise for other keys.

Or for example, you could put an A and D together. This would make it easy to move riffs through 1-4-5 changes.

Use 2nd position on the A and D for the 1 and 4 chords (E and A), then use 3rd position on the A harp for the 5 chord (B).

Another set up: Dorian mode harmony. Let's say you want to play in A Dorian mode. Use a D and C big sixes.

With the D harp, flatten the C#...That gives you a beautiful Amin chord. The rest are D C and G chords ready to go, straight to Scarborough Fair!

I have extensive experience with Seydel's Big Sixes (with wood and plastic combs) and also their Configurator.

The first thing to know about the Big Six is that it is simply a six-hole version of their excellent 1847 line--complete with stainless steel reeds of the highest quality. The Big Six is a full-scale instrument, i.e. it is truncated to six holes, but it is not "shrunken" in all three dimensions.

I have posted many alternate tunings for the Big Six and also for the Twin/Double Big Six (before such a thing even existed) on Brendan Power's forum called "Interesting Alternative Harmonica Ideas". I also assisted Brendan in the development of his "Seydel Twin Big Six comb", which he now sells on his website.

Approaching tunings and playing in terms of "six" or "six plus six" can be a refreshing game-changer. If you go that route, please share your experiences!
