I recently acquired a Hohner Unsere Lieblinge (octave tuned) in the key of F. It's got the star on it, so probably pre-war. It was pretty dirty so I took it apart to clean it. Being wood and nails, I thought I should touch up the tuning before I put it back together. It is pretty far out of tune, but by all indications, it is tuned in the key of A. So, why is a pre-way harp with Key of F markings be tuned in the key of A?

Is it actually in the scale of A, or is A just the first note on the left?

The reason I mention that possibility is that in some keys, some double-reed harps start on what would normally be Hole 2, which on an F-harp would be A.

Check this - do the blow notes, starting from the left (I don't think there are any hole numbers) go A - C - F? If so, it's actually in F.

However, it's possible that someone made a project of retuning an F harp that started on A into an A-harp.

So, I'd do a complete inventory of the notes before proceeding. Touching up the tuning on an F-harp would be less work than returning it to being in F from being in A.

Thanks Winslow. That helps a lot. I was thinking A because 4 looks like A also, but it would be on an F that starts on A too. ACFA. It's 7 notes, 14 reads each plate. Kind of small/limited, but interesting all the same.
