Don't you hate it... no good harmonica in your area forever, then the weekend you have to go to your cousin's wedding Magic Dick is playing an intimate venue?
Lol. I've already reserved the minivan and made arrangements to drive out with my brother and his gf. When it comes right down to it, my cousin will hopefully (her fiance is a nice guy) only get married once and hopefully I'll get another chance to see Magic Dick.
looks like this show is coming to town, i have to check i think it may be this week.
i have to give a shout out to my friend mike matthews, he stood in line for hours on end with hurricane winds blowing thru the night to make sure we do not miss this once in a lifetime event.
i just watch that video once again, some nice stuff all the way around.
I don't know, but if you're not the best man or father of the bride, have no speaking part in the show, aren't going to remember what was said, and can give adequate notice so they aren't stuck paying for an uneaten meal...send your apologies with a present, see Magic Dick, watch their wedding video and write a nice review of the show and the video for their wedding album.
Statistics say that at 72, MD has 3.42 years of life expectancy remaining (limiting your chance to see him). Your cousin's first marriage has a 52% chance of lasting over 20 years. So she'll have plenty of time to enjoy your gift, read and re-read your reviews of the MD performance and of her wedding video, and see you in less crowded surrounds. Plus, she should be the center of attention that day. Staying away you won't upstage the happy couple. Just want you to do what's best for the newlyweds...although you may never be forgiven for being so kind. ---------- BnT

BnT, when I was a little kid, maybe back around 1980 or so, my mom, who had grown up to folk music, civil rights rallies (she was at the Mall when MLK gave his I have a Dream speech), saw that one of her favorite musicians was performing. Money was tight (I think it was right after my parents split up) but she managed to get tickets. She was worried that I wouldn't get to see him. He was already in his 60s.
Pete Seeger managed to live into his mid-90s, and I was still doing shows until the end. I got to see him 3 times in the year before he passed. Hopefully we'll get to see MD another time. I think actually, when you get to 72 your life expectancy is still a fair bit more than what it takes to get to average life expectancy (knock on wood) since that average takes into account a lot of people who died young. I think the charts say he should have another 12 years or so assuming he is in average health for someone his age. :)
just for the record... this would be the epitome of modern blues harmonica playing. to take a classic and drive it out to the nether regions of the stratosphere.
no one, but no one, but the original composer could ever come close to pulling this off... ever. this cat is bad ass... did i say that out loud? ---------- .
a few of us got a chance to check out this show on wed. the highlights were key to the highway/ bring it on home medley which showcased both of these find players, and of coarse whammer jammer, which he played true to the original, and not with the altered tuned harp he used in the above example.
where as the jgeils band is loud and raucous with everyone dancing, this was a bit more sedate with everyone sitting down listening to each tiny little inflection.
very enjoyable.
