Hi all,

I'm planning to try grow my teaching/gigging with facebook.

I am at a bit of a loss as to whether to start a "Musician" page or a "Business" page.

As I look around, it seems I could go either way.

When I teach, it's exclusively as an employee of a music store rather than a contractor, but I do a good bit of performing as well.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Why not do both? There's not reason you can't. It is easy to copy and past content to multiple pages. I do it all the time. You will see which one takes off and then concentrate on that. Or maybe different pages will provide exposure to different demographics and both will yield results.

Are you planning to start your own teaching business on the side or will you continue to teach at the music store? If your anwser is the music store, I would consult with the owner before you do anything. You just never know how people are going to react.

If you have a personal presence on FB, that's an important consideration. Having three profiles (personal, artist, business) named "Steve Lastname" might be more confusing with little or no added value. If you have "Steve Lastname" as your personal profile and "Steve and the Tech Tones" as your artist page name and "Music Lessons by Steve" as your business page, each one has a distinct place and they all compliment each other. It will keep your channels separate (like Ghostbusters) so each can be more effective.

I have both an artist page for myself and a business page for my business. I disabled my personal profile just to be more private and use a ghost account with 0 friends so I can manage the other pages.

I echo what Tom said about being transparent with your music stores and other business partners. Most folks will be okay with whatever you want to do so long as you are upfront with them.

I do brand development and marketing for a living, so don't ever hesitate to reach out if you ever have questions. arrick@windmillmarketing.com

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for the late reply. I've been away.

I think I'll do just as both of you suggest and make a page as an artist and one as a teacher.

The store owner suggested I do the facebook thing, so I'm good there.

Thanks again.
