I wanted to get your opinion on some of the country music harp players out there..... I want to be sure I separate it out from music like "Oh Susanna" and "Red River Valley" type songs. I'm talking more in line with modern Country Music from, say, the 60's on. Within it alone are subcategories, like my favorite, honky-tonk, bluegrass maybe, Texas Music/Red Dirt/Americana, etc.

I find Honky Tonk is served well with the harp. Johnny Paycheck has a lot in his songs. I believe Charlie McCoy did most of it. There is also Terry McMillan. Mickey Raphael. Clint Black is another, I think, underrated player (I think this happens to harp player who sing songs for the radio, like Huey Lewis [they're better than they seem]).

Let's hear your thoughts.....

Check out Jelly Roll Johnson, first call Nashville session guy. He's great. His tone and control are as good as it gets. He makes it sound so easy, but I learned the hard way not to pick up a harp after listening to one of his cds. Damn nice guy, too.

Good one. I also heard of Will Griffin, but I can't find much on him.

Paycheck's harp player back in the day was PT Gazell (who then went by Phil). PT is now a swing and standards player, using his onw system of half-valved Seydel harps.
