I have been fooling around playing harp through an Audix D-1 snare drum mic, using it with a Blows Me Away in line volume control. I like it. Then I saw that EV makes a snare/tom mic, the PL-35. Not very expensive, and I like EV mics anyway, so I ordered one. It comes with a mounting bracket on it that unscrews and comes off. I put an in line vc on it and, WOW!

Very powerful output, but not gainy so feedback is not a problem. Extremely strong proximity effect, so you can vary volume and timbre dramatically with mic cupping hand technique. Produces a very big, thick, full sound. Very clean, however, but has that EV mojo (thickness in the midrange and a smooth rounded edge to the notes)--harp players who like older EV mics know what I'm talking about. VERY harp friendly.

Now, it's not at all dirty, so if you are after distortion, you won't like this mic. It has something of a unique sound that most of the musicians I play with think is very cool. There's also no treble "edge" which can be an advantage but can also be a disadvantage if you need extreme cut. But the output is so strong and powerful you can play relatively soft and still be strongly present. It produces a very BIG sound. It's different--not like anything you've heard on a record, but a very interesting sound IMHO. Perhaps not for everyone, but I like it a lot.
