I was way fortunate enough to go see Allan Holdsworth a week ago in San Marcos California with my buddy George, who writes for the local paper. It was great--I had seen him before, and knew what to expect. What I didn't expect was that tonight my friend George would call me with the sad news that Allan has unexpectedly passed away last night, found dead this morning. I got to shake Allan's hand and say hello last week--guess it was goodbye as well. 70 years old . . . Check out his music if you have not already done so, he was a talented guitarist and composer.

He used to come to our blues jams, he did not play: just to hang out And have a pint. I saw him just the other day, he had a gig by my house, it may of very well have been his last performance.
I recorded it. I was going to ask him if that was ok. Now I see that he had a dispute with someone he played with for over 30 years, who was selling bootleg copies of the gigs. It may be what broke up the band.
He was using 2 quilter amps, I was amazed at how it could make that much sound, until I realized he also had a 4-12 mesa boogie amp as well.
Allan was on a different level musically, Mozart comes to mind. Super nice guy with a sense of humor. R.I.P.

I've seen Holdsworth about six times live since discovering him in the band Tempest in 1973 , and he is easily the most brilliant electric guitarist I've ever seen. And I've seen A LOT of incredibly fine guitarists in fifty years. His was original and radical on so many levels--speed, phrasing, treatment of chords, was of playing on and around rigorously eccentric rhythms. He was a genuine improviser, inventing something new each time he approached on of his regular pieces during a set. This is a great loss and I am very sad. ---------- Ted Burke
