I'm probably not supposed to do this--but I'd just like to say here on the active part of this forum that there is a whole shop full of stuff for sale over on the "for sale or trade" sub-forum. Just in case somebody over here cares. . .

I will make this clearer . . .
Our buddy Oldwailer has a bunch of harp parts for sale, $100 takes all, includes tools and etc.
Tempting for a repair guy like me--but I'm not a Marine Band guy (still tempting!)

I wish I could Oldwailer. Your generosity is going to make someone very happy.

So sorry that your wife has fallen ill and so sorry that you've had to let go of this dream. I wish you the best and sincerely hope you at least still find time to enjoy playing.

Now someone get over to the For Sale or Trade forum and snatch up this deal!

Tom

Might get a bit more exposure if the ad is in the 2017 for sale area.

Oldwailer, the rule is just to prevent people spamming. For a one shot deal like this for a long time member there is no problem at all if you want to post the whole thing here. Sorry to hear about your wife's health.

Do you have an any estimates on what shipping would be? (I'm in New York, but if I'm priced out I'm sure other people would be interested in an estimate too.)

Thanks Everybody for the responses.

My wife of 46 years passed away last August after a very long illness. I could go on with the harp shop now, I just don't want to anymore. I'm busy downsizing and moving into a 31' motor home. I plan to take off the first week in May and just travel to wherever the sun is shining and only the beer is cold. I'm sick of the cold and wet here in Western Washington.

Nacoran--I think the whole thing will fit very tightly into a large USPS flat rate box--which means under $20 for shipment to any USA destination. I have had one response email from Australia, but I don't know what the shipping would be for that.

I'll post the ad over here so everybody sees it--the harp shop is really free to whoever wants it--I'm just charging shipping and $100 for my time in getting it sent off. . .

So--here is the ad as promised:

Hello,
Some old-timers may remember me from a few years ago. I once tried to get a harp shop started--I even went down to Arizona and studied customization of harps with Chris (Buddha) Michalek.

Well--my wife got sick--had to go back to real work--blah, blah. . .I never did get the harp shop really going.

However--I collected up a huge pile of stuff for this shop. I am now selling off whatever is left from those good old days--I don't have the time or energy to do that kind of work now. Here are a couple of photos of the stuff I have for sale. I will only sell the whole mess in one shot--don't ask me to break out an Ab harp for you.

There are about 35 or 40 Marine Bands that I got from Ebay on a package deal way back when--(they are bagged by key)--they were damaged somehow and the covers are rusted--some really badly--some not as much. They will all probably need new covers and combs. There is also a collection of combs--some I made--some just saved--a bunch of tools that I made or just collected--two old chro 64's that need repair--and a bunch of just odd parts. I have never opened up one of the rusty harps to find anything but pristine, new plates. (Your mileage may vary). There are a couple of aluminum combs that I made and did inlays with a fake turquoise treatment--don't know if they would work out or not.

Well, just study the pics below to see if you're interested. I think there is a lot of value here just in spare parts--the weight of the whole box is about 23 pounds. I will actually give this stuff away to whoever wants it--but, there is a catch: I would want $100 for my time and effort in boxing the stuff up and shipping it--plus, you pay the shipping.

The boxes in the pictures are just empty boxes--they come in handy to keep a harp's parts together while working on it.

If that seems steep--make an offer, but I'd rather just put the whole mass into a dumpster than mess with it for nothing.

Thanks for looking!

Sorry to hear of all your troubles, Ray. Sometimes downsizing and simplifying is the best step. I would offer to buy 'em off you too, but my life is already too full of things these days that I barely have time to play, let alone tinker line I used to. Phil will make good use of them, I'm sure!

Hey Isaac! On another topic--where are you situated now? I plan to be down around Arizona in the Fall--did you move back there, or did I just dream it?

No, you didn't dream it. I did move back, but recently got a good (permanent) professor job at San Diego State, so that's where I'm at now and for the foreseeable future. If you come out to the coast, let me know!

Safe travels Oldwailer, I hope you find some joy in this new chapter of your life.

@ Philosofy, enjoy your time down the rabbit hole. Say hello to the rabbits for me, they're a good bunch mostly.

Me too, Sherwin--for several months now my life seems like ended last August--I'm hoping for a new beginning!

Isaac--I expect to spend some time in Slab City next winter if all goes as planned. Since that's only 140 miles East of San Diego, I might just get a chance to get over to the coast--I'll let you know if I do. . .

I'm looking forward to this bundle! I'll be making my own combs soon, and maybe even my own covers from wood.

Safe travels Oldwailer, hope you find sunny climes and cold beers. Love to see a photo of your '31 motor home, bet you got it nice and cosy inside.

Gnarly, I'm glad he did too, because that meant he beat me to the punch too... which sometimes is for the best- when your GAS is acting up sometimes the best thing for it is to have someone else who has it worse than you to pull the trigger faster. :)

I got the package today! Lots of neat stuff. I think I'll convert the old Marine Bands to screws, then clean then up, then see which need tuning and new reeds.

Ray,
My heartfelt condolences.
If and when you hit the road, if you find yourself coming down the backside of the Cascades, cross into California and come by the house. We are in the valley that is the recognized overlap of the southern terminus of the Cascades and the northern fade out of the Sierra Nevada ranges.

You should still have my old cartoon AOL email. If not, Nate or Adam can give it to you.

All I need is a little leadtime. Not so much for a defined date, but for an estimated period on the calendar in case I'm off working somewhere.

You have an open invitation. Got water, power and an RV dumpout for you (when we built the house we installed a standalone septic tank and leach system to accommodate all our friends with RV's).

Brendon--its a work in progress. Still trying to figure out how to get everything in there. Next week I roll out--ready or not. Here's a photo--just a side view, but all I had handy:

Hey Buz!! That is a very nice offer--I just might be down that way later in the summer. If so, I'll try to contact you well in advance. Do you have a limit on how many years an old RVer can stay?

Not if you bring a guitar......

Actually, if it's too late in the summer, I'll be spending the early part of September about 200 miles down the Sierras (not too far from Yosemite) doing some work on a dam. The lake we're working on has several campgrounds on it and my guys will all be in a 'tent city' of RV's and 5th wheels during the job. You can change your scenery if you want.
