Hey guys, just listening to some Taj Mahal stuff today. Gave Leaving trunk blues a good listen. Just sweet playing on this great tune. Anyone have and idea what harp rig Taj was playing through for this track? Real cool rootsy sound with bite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gBqwWOWKLE
I don't know about his rig but I saw him two years ago and man oh man that was one of the best shows I've ever been too. I bought the last three tickets at the Centre for Performing Arts in St Catherines and got two friends to blindly shell out $70 a piece to go to a show that I asked them to "Just trust me" on. They both agreed it was one the best shows ever. These two guys also go to a lot of concerts. He's worth seeing if he comes round your town. He still totally has it despite being over 70! Unfortunately he played like 7 instruments but no harmonica. I was totally o.k. with it too.
I love the way Taj plays harp! I have seen him twice in the last 9 months, both in a trio format. He was awesome both times, but only blew harp in the first show. His rhythm section is killer. There is a Bonnie Raitt record I have where Taj plays harp on one cut. It's a Mose Allison tune-'Everybody's Crying Mercy" and he just kills it. Can't play it as it's on vinyl, but as I remember,it was some kind of low pitched harp. Y-Tube has it,but embedding is disabled. BTW-he seems to just play into his vocal mic straight into PA.
