I just got my Yonberg Typhoon in A in the mail, and initial impressions are quite good. Projects well, seems really air tight, and came very well tuned.
It really was quick and easy to take a part and reassemble, and the guts of the thing look really cool.
I had planned on half-valving this instrument, but I realized right away upon opening it that I'm going to have to take my time with this one. The narrowing and otherwise changing shape of the holes in the comb are going to make this a real challenge. How do I make tiny valves that are shaped right to fit in the comb without getting stuck, but wide enough to actually do their job and cover the reed slot? Yikes... wish me luck!
I still plan on retuning this beast into PowerDraw tuning, but there will be consequences. Those top 4 holes will need valves inside the comb as well.
In any case, if anyone has had any experience valving one of these, please let me know. I'll update my progress as we go.
I've done holes 1-6. Substantially easier than I thought. I clearly over-thought the impact that the profiling of the chambers would have on the process. The valve material I am using works well even when cutting the valves much narrower than usual.

I'm rather optimistic at this point. It's a cool harp design, with quality Seydel steel reed plates and reeds. If the re-tune to PowerDraw and the rest of the valving goes well, this harp may become a favourite of mine...
more to come.
