Hello out there in harpville. Anybody have or have access to Original style Sp. 20 reeds ( not Progressive ). I sure could use several C5 draw 5 for G harps.

Yeah, I was gonna go out there with Tom but I re-injured my foot and didnt want to hobble around for 6 hrs.

Any MB, 20, XO, MBD reeds will work. Draw 5 on a G, Blow 5 on a Ab or Draw 3 on a Db would work. Thanks.

The reeds haven't changed. The only things different on a progressive sp20 is the word progressive on the cover and an extra drilling to allow them to fit rocket covers and the reedplate screw size is now 1.6mm instead of 2mm. Although some early harps with progressive covers still have the eArlier 2mm screws

Thanks Bee. Yeah they are the same size and will go. I got some new ones and it seems the brass is different. They are about 20 to 28 cents flat so after I bring them up they are thin and sound weak. Went through 3 and the same thing happened. They may sound ok in the new Progressive but not next to the older brass.

well thats annoying. i'd say that having a link in your signature block is a really bad idea from the spam filter angle.

Slim, i just wrote a pretty good post but its disappeared before i could even have another crack at the code.

what i was saying though is that hohner dont differentiate between the reeds they supply for the marine band and progressive series harps. they haven't made any changes that i can detect since i began purchasing reeds from them 4 years ago.

i repair well over 100 hohner handmade harps every year. 20-30 cents flat for a new reed is more common than not. sometimes you get a pack which is very close when installed but the normal state is that they will need to come up at least 20 cents, more often 30 or more. There is plenty of brass there though; you can bring them up a whole tone in a pinch (i.e. 200 cents) though i'd rather not. 50 cents should be no problem though.

i dunno what you are using to tune them? i use a fairly fine swiss pattern file. cant recall the grade right now; i'd have to check, but its finer than the files in the harp manufacturers' tool kits. i finish the last ten cents or so with a sanding wand which gives a more even result.

anyway, good luck with it.

Thanks SB. As mentioned before, these play well but sound thin. I talked to Harpwench and he clarified the situation. I think I have a solution for the newer reeds.
I never had this problem with the older reeds I have scavenged. I am using a sanding wand to raise pitch. I will try the file and wand. I may be flattening the tip too much also.
Thanks for the info and insights. I do about as many as you do. Every once in a while I come up with a head scratcher.
