This is my favorite one: "Don’t play everything (or everytime); let some things go by. Some music just imagined."

The audience is doing so much work in their heads. You can just imply a note or phrase, and the audience will fill in the blank.

Studied quite a lot of Monk in college. The man had a troubled life, and his biography is definitely worth a read.

My favorite Monk-ism...
“You know what’s the loudest noise in the world, man? The loudest noise in the world is silence.”

Regardless of the genre, that holds true.

@Nathan I like that. Silence is deafening.

Another Monk-ism I heard recently was "A genius is the one most like himself." Mind blowing.

I'll check out Monk's bio. Ever listen to Marc Maron's WTF podcast? So many great stories of creative people.

Nathan: Which biography, the one by Robin Kelley? I'd like to check it out.

@ValleyDuke...Yeah, I consider planned silence to be the most impactful thing an ensemble can do to jar an audience.

I read the one by Robin Kelley. Lots of interesting bits in there, and it really illustrates both how creative and deeply flawed he was.

Jr. Wells and Buddy Guy did a song Viet Cong Blues and I believe Jr. blew one note at the end of the song,it was a killer...That one note hit harder than a hundred notes...the harp silence had all anticipating the final harp sound...
