I have a harp train 10, not much use, and the vol pot makes a scrathcy sound. How do I know if this is a bad preamp tube or if the pot is dirty?

I taped the amp to see if there where any noise from a bad tube, but I didint get anything.

When you have this problem, what do you do to rule out one or the other?

I had one amp like that where it was the pot breaking down. Replaced the pot.
You can easily eliminate the tube question by swapping the tube with a known good one. I doubt it's the tube.
Could be a cap. I dunno that circuit. Look for the possibility of DC leaking to the pot.
As for the pot, does it get less crackly if you work the pot back and forth? Is there a particular place where it crackles? This would be an indication the problem is with the pot

@Rogo,Have you tried using control/contact cleaner and lubricant?I have a can i picked up yrs back from Radio Shack and it works well for this issue. You remove the knob of the said pot and give it a good lite spray.turn it back and forth a few times and it should take care of the problem,at least it has for me in the past. There are other products out there that do the same.i think that this will be a quick and easy fix for you.Good Luck

I'm leaning toward the pot being the issue.

Did you purchase the Harp Train 10 from us or Harmonicas-Direct? I'm also always available by email for support, regardless of how you acquired our products.

Stewart Macdonald makes guitar repair stuff-on one of their videos ;;;he takes a guitar pot out the guitar, puts a paper towel under the pot and sticks the electrical cleaner spray tube 'in the pot' and drenches it all the crap goes on the white paper towel. he worked the knob back n forth. when he put it back in the guitar ---it worked perfect---no more scratch---dirty pots is very common hope this helps

Hi, sorry for the late response.

Here is an audio clip of the problem:

Can you hear that "static"(?) sound when I play a note? What can it be? I need this amp to record an album in a couple month.

What do you think?

Hi rogo.
I would start with the suggestions from the previous posts. I don't have the plug in needed to hear your clip but I would take some spray contact cleaner and clean the input jack and speaker output jacks and if it is easily accessible the volume pot(or all pots since you don't know for sure) and finally clean the tube sockets. All of those things would cost you nothing but a little contact cleaner.
I would use contact cleaner with lube for the pots but that's debatable.
If you gently move the tube around and it makes noise it could be the tube socket and should be cleaned regardless.
-If you turn the pot and it makes noise it should be cleaned regardless.
-Lastly do all the easy free things mentioned in previous posts so you can eliminate some of the possibilities.

Actualy, I can live whit the pot noise, but that static noise when I play I need to fix it. I am planing to record my first album this year, and I need this amp to be perfect (because I love it).

Chassis might even be loose or the speaker or a handle etc.
Eliminate the easy stuff first. Should be done anyway.

I dunno about the pot but I hear that buzz. Had a similiar thing in my pig nose. Never did solve it. Thought it was the speaker but changed it and no difference..

If you've eliminated tube rattle, can you plug into an external speaker and eliminate the speaker or some rattle in the cab?

This weekend I am going to tight every screw that I can find, plus I will put one of those damper rings in the preamp tube.

I do have an external speaker, I will also try that.

I will let you know if I find out anything.

If you try the speaker first, you'll know whether it's worth the trouble of going looking for loose screws
