The other day I was pulling down a music video to watch and the obligatory, ubiquitous ad came on. You know, the one with the "you can skip this ad in...(countdown)". And I wondered, is there anybody who doesn't hit that skip button? I can't hit it fast enough. I almost sprained a finger the other day.

It got me thinking. What a curious industry. The sole business model is to deliver some kind of content in the hopes that people will watch some advertising, which they almost universally (I'm assuming) hate to do. I know, its no different then TV or radio which is decades old, its just that the ability to skip the ad, really emphasized to me how much I despise them.

So, is there anybody here who has watched one of those ads? I don't mean put your video on and the ad came up while you were doing something else, and so it ran because you were too lazy/busy to go back to the computer. I mean you sat down to watch a great music video for example and that ad came up, and you thought, yeah I think I'll watch this? Be honest.

There are plenty of videos where you're not given the option of skipping the ad. "You want to watch this video? The you're gonna have to watch our ad."

And there are plenty of other videos that don't have the "instead of watching the video you selected. wouldn't you rather watch an ad for a product you're not interested in" prequel. No, instead they start the video and while it's running they put up a big banner ad you have to click away.

Once upon a time it wasn't like that and now it is and always will be, until someone comes up with a "new, ad-free version of youtube", which in a couple of years will start running ads.

Anybody remember when cable TV started up? "Wow, no advertising! This is gonna be great!" Uh-huh.

I think sometimes it works as a filter. Hulu used to, I think, actually let you pick from 3 different product ads to watch. I'd say I skip 99% of the ads on YouTube (when I'm not using an ad blocker). But that's because after 5 seconds I already know I have no interest in the product. I think their goal in the first 5 seconds is brand awareness, and actually that may score better than a regular 5 second ad would, since you actually have to pay attention to at least part of the ad (the countdown box).

That said, I use an adblocker. I whitelist sites that I want to support as long as they follow good ad etiquette- no autoplaying audio, no popups. The way I browse I open a bunch of windows and then close them as I finish reading them. I can't do that if multiple sites autoplay audio.

Some sites also don't get whitelisted because their ads pop in in ways that move the text I'm reading. As a dyslexic this drives me crazy. I've written angry letters over it several times.

And the newest annoying ad- the passive aggressive- where a popup pops up and instead of just an X to close it there is some obnoxious message like, 'Close if you don't want to lose weight now'. I actively boycott any product I see advertised that way, although mostly they are cheap scam products anyway.

And after all that, I feel guilty, because I know content providers need to be paid. I really don't mind seeing ads for Tom or Andrew's harps, or funny ads, or whatever, but I don't need denture cream or feminine hygiene products at the moment (and don't expect to ever need feminine hygiene products!)

Frank101, technologically it's still difficult to deliver, but I suspect eventually there will be two tiers for all channels- a regular, with ads version, and a premium with no ads that you pay extra for. Of course, the people who can afford to pay extra are the people the advertisers want to target,...

The targeting technology in selecting these adds is impressive, amazing and a bit unsettling. I have had cases where I get an add that seems to be targeted based on something I have posted on this forum. Are they reviewing my every keystroke to ascertain what I might be interested in at the time? Lately I have been getting adds for bassoon reeds. I don't know a lot about markets or marketing, but I think bassoon reeds are a pretty niche market. Not something you would see advertised on the Super Bowl or in Time magazine. How many of you have ever seen a pop up video add for a bassoon reed? I am impressed, and a bit concerned.

I looked into Facebook's tactics before signing them off. What they and others (like YT) do, is go thru your cookies and compile a profile based on your web footprints.

My final straw with FB was when they notified a 'friend' that I was 'following' a certain politician. This assumption/insinuation was based on a visit to news web site. I had not clicked anything (never do) on the page and simply read the article. Big brother is cross eyed.

like nate says adblocker works great. in addition a program like no script
really is a one two punch. i use one browser to block all the unnecessary items.
and another browser if i want to post something on this site.

Hey, just noticed on youtube that some videos have 2 or 3 pop up ads during playback. When you position pointer over the "x", it disappears or moves, making it almost impossible to close. pretty insidious.
