The Blues Rebels - Voodoo Land (2016)
Blues Rock, Blues, Funk, Americana | © The Blues Rebels

A unique blend of soulful Blues and funk with hard driving Blues-rock, produced by legendary Blues artist Joe Louis Walker! For this album, the band decided to re-connect with Blues hall-of-fame member Joe Louis Walker, who had played several shows with them in 2013. Walker returned to Israel in the winter of 2016 to produce the album, which contains 12 new compositions by Dov Hammer and Andy Watts, featuring the bands signature sound, incorporating Blues, rock and funk, and includes a special guest appearance by Joe Louis Walker himself.
Track 13 is a real bonus - an electronic remix of a Blues Rebels song ("well run dry"), taking this raw, downhome Blues to the chillout stratosphere ! Check out this unique fusion of seemingly conflicting styles
The Blues Rebels began in 2012 as a one-time friendly jam between two veteran Blues artists – guitarist Andy Watts and singer/harmonica player Dov Hammer (who had previously played also with Zora Young, Deitra Farr, Billy Branch, Paul deLay, "King" Earnest Baker and many other American Blues artists) .
The immediate chemistry between the two and the powerful stage show that resulted was undeniable. The Blues Rebels soon became one of the hottest Blues bands on the Israeli scene, playing with world-class Blues artists such as Joe Louis Walker, Lucky Peterson and Bernard Allison. The band was also chosen to open for the legendary Johnny Winter, who told the band how impressed he was by their performance.
In March 2015 the band released its first self produced album "Open road" which received much praise from many Blues publications in Europe and the USA, as well as plenty of radio play in Europe and Israel

I think I saw the name a while back on Harp-L, but at Harmonica Collective in 2015 I met him. He was there during the 2 days I attended. After the first jam I complimented him on his playing. He was GOOD!

Met him for the first time at Hill Country Harmonica in 2012. Then we were both at the Harmonica Collective in 2105 so I spent about 3 days with him and about 30 other guys. He is a very accomplished player and singer but at The Collective, he was an eager student like the rest of us - gobbling up new ideas. He is a genuinely nice guy. I think he was born in Chicago but now lives in Israel.

I to met him at HCH. We had cabins at Wall-Doxey state park. He is a nice guy. Jammed with him a few times. When we were leaving that weekend, he had a new chair he had purchased - he obviously could not take it on the plane he gave it to me.

Listening to Dov's latest recording with The Blues Rebels.

Excellent band. Blues, funk, etc. Good musicianship. Some blues sounds a bit like how Robert Cray approaches this genre.

Dov sounds like a very young Chris Farlowe (Brits should know this name) with more vibrato.

Harmonica playing is what I would call very strong intermediate with confidence, only to improve as time goes on.

Enjoyable.

I haven't heard him since 2015. Before I seek out recordings, I have a question:

What specifically, by your standards, would he need to be doing in his performance in order for you to assess him as an advanced player rather than intermediate?

More originality, depth and maturity.

What I heard on the CD was well done, but contained no surprises (to me).
